[QUOTE="Thessassin"]hmm now that i look back im thinking i think something was lost in translation from my brain to my text. either way what i did mean was that i wouldnt consider a fetus as human, untill it passes through the vagina ( or by way of c-section) its not a human to me.foxhound_fox

I don't want to get into an abortion debate here... but children don't become sentient and fully self aware until well after birth. A foetus carries human DNA, is "alive" by biological standards and will most undoubtedly be as "human" at birth as they are in adulthood or foetal-hood... yet you consider birth to be the defining factor between "human" and "non-human."

What exactly changes at birth that makes a newborn different from a foetus? No child can feed itself until at least 18-24 months.

Sorry mindstorm, he brought up the sentience argument.

My only point of wonder on the subject is: We kill any other animal or plant (fungi, protist, etc.) at any time if it helps our quality of life, but killing a human fetus, which is as self aware as a blade of grass cut by your lawn mower this morning, is off limits. Why is this so? If that question is dared to be asked, we must ask this one also. What is wrong with killing it after birth? And genetic-code, how did you reach the conclusion that existance without "life" and justice would be meaningless? (I like having people explain their statements, so heed me if you will)

The ability to contemplate abstract concepts is one of things that makes us human. One of the few reasons we are the dominant and intelligent species on earth.

Well, for starters, Link himself. Why is he silent, and why is the triforces chosen one always a boy named Link, whom many people know, but seems rarely to have a history?

Ganondorf is pretty awesome. His laugh is probably one of the most legendary evil laughs ever (Overall, Darth Sidious has the top evil laugh). No super villian can ever copy his laugh. It is absolutley sick. Essentially, it makes him since the characters don't talk in the Zelda games (what would Ganon sound like if he could talk????).

This question if for gamer, Zelda, and Star Wars fans: Who would win in a fight, Ganondorf or Darth Malak

finsfanz13
Even if Malak kills him, Ganon will just be reborn by the power of the triforce or something. Or pull a twilight princess and simply not die. But, then again, "Always two, there are." Ganondorf from Ocarina's nose beats Malak on its own. But Darth Maul's horns and tatoos are a decent rival. ;) XD

[QUOTE="Dr_AlanGrant"]

Whenever I think about what it would be like when we die, I can never wrap my head around it. I always end up thinking it will probably be like before we were born. To me, that's sort of a scary thing to think about. Although, I always I thought it would be cool to be reincarnated into some other animal and still retain some of our former conciseness.

Maqda7

I agree with you, the idea that we simple stop existing terrifies me. But I take a little solace in imagining a reincarnation.

Well supposing we do cease "consious" existance, that is why you try to leave a mark on the memory of the world. I don't worry about death. My questions will be answered when I get there (although I probably won't know it, because I'm DEAD).

Cause and effect are what govern the universe.

What happened before has an effect on the present and events in the future. I would argue that our minds, our "consciousness," is a result of our biology (inherent traits built into our bodies and brains) and our experience of events throughout our past. This leads me to the conclusion that there cannot be "free will," but merely the illusion of "choice."

We are both not capable of making every single possible choice (due to physical and mental limitations) nor have the ability to know of every single possible choice. The "I" is a result cause and effect; working through our in-born biological traits (which effect our physical capabilities and mental predispositions) and our compendium of biological and mental memories (experiences) of past events which shape our ever-changing consciousness into the "I" that we assume we "know" we "are."foxhound_fox
But do you agree that completely random and unpredictable events exist?

From a human standpoint, this question is impossible to answer. It could appear that what is "evil" is really that which has a negative affect on the self or the species through natural selection. Or that what is evil is relative to the eye of the beholder. If you are theist, what is evil is the things your deity condemns. But how did that deity invent this "correct" system?

My reason: I am not a "theist" in any sense of the word.

I am not a monotheist, I am not a pantheist, nor am I a polytheist. I do not believe in a God, gods or the supernatural. I've spent a good portion of my life trying to find a religion that "works" for me and the closest I've come is Hinduism. Though, there are still some thing about it that I either disagree with or cannot fully comprehend.foxhound_fox
Watch out with the "'works' for me" statements. You can get many responses along the lines of "You don't find a religion that fits you. The truth doesn't have to be comfortable." and "That's like saying '2x2 doesn't equal 4 because it doesn't feel right'". Just watch out for that in discussion.

Damn Glitchspot. I had a nice post typed out. I need to start using Word and copy pasting. Anyways, my basic points were: Human examples are worthless in this discussion, because we all have been exposed to religion/morality by family/peers. Morality of some sort is favorable through natural selection. Cannibalism is not. Those are the main ideas.

I am very deterministic. Yet, even if I knew every fact about every object in existance, I could not predict what would happen tomorrow. The reason being random events. For example, if I was omnipotent, I could predict that a person would spin around in a circle saying, "Eenie, meenie, miney, mo" to chose what shirt to wear. But would I be able to predict where the person stops and what shirt they will chose beforehand? No, because this event is not predetermined. If I just fling my hand around the keyboard without looking, will I be able to predict what keys I will press? Maybe, maybe not, but I think not. I am too tired to invent a truly and undisputedly random situation, maybe later.
