EPL rights in the UK belongs to Sky and British Telecom, I think. Sky is the reason Microsoft had to change the name of SkyDrive to OneDrive. So, I don't think they want to work together for a while.
The NFL game broadcast rights in the US belongs to four different broadcasters - CBS, Fox, Disney (ESPN), and NBC. Each of these companies paid Billions to secure the rights. So, Microsoft is probably not going to compete for the broadcast rights of those games.
What Microsoft is doing is to supplementing the games with additional contents such as real-time stats and interactive contents. It would be cool if this Brazil Now app notification has a mechanism to change channel. For example, I am watching USA vs Germany which will be played at the same time as Ghana vs Portugal. Supposes Ghana scores, the notification pops up, I hold the Xbox globe button, the app changes the channel on my cable box to the Ghana game just in time for me to watch the replay of the goal.
