If I were to go to war, the games I would play wouldn't change based on it, I would play whatever made me happy so I could enjoy myself before deployment.

You assume the Game of the Year has to also have the highest rating. It's not uncommon for a game that wasn't highest-rated on a website to be Game of the Year, or at least be nominated. You have Grand Theft Auto: China Town Wars on there, which was 9.5, but Demon's Souls, which was 9.0, has a better chance of winning. When picking the game of the year, or how they pick the Oscar winner, it's not so much about score as it is about the big impression.
