Hi everyone.

Has anybody had or heard of "Halo limited edition" 360's doing the rings of death? They have been out for a while now and I haven't heard of any failures yet.

Thanks

CHECK THIS OUT!!!!!!!!!! POSSIBLE FIX FOR XBOX 360 FREEZING CONCERN:

1) Tookapart 360 5times (TRIAL & ERROR)!!!

2) Appliedthermal paste in between GPU & CPU and heatsinks.

3) Removed X-CLAMPSand installed hardware kit as per forums.

4) Cleared cacheand performed system maintenance as per recommendations.

5) 360still crashing!!!!! Very Frustrated!!!!! Cutopen top of360and installed5"fan (150+ CFM).Still Crashing!!!!!!VERY,VERY,VERY FRUSTRATED!!!!

Took apart againandnoticed when GAME/DVDdriveisnot on top of GPUandfans (2 -5" fans)areblowing on the CPU and GPU the 360 WILL NOT CRASH, GLITCH, FREEZE, NOTHING ---works flawlessly. NowI amrunningdriveoutside of caseand system has not crashed in 2 days. Iamcompletelyout of warranty and have no receipt and purchasedmy bricked xbox 360 for $50.00 and fixed for about $20 -The case doesn't look thegreatestbut I have been playing Gearsof War constantly and system is runningvery smooth with no glitches (seems to be running faster). I hope this works for all you others out there that are in the same boat as me (nopossible warranty) and email with any questions.

The last paragraph is very interesting indeed. If other people can replicate this and for a fair length of time that would prove that M$ made a basic mistake in the positioning of the components. I can't believe that they would let the DVD drive block the air from the fan! Ridiculous if true, and why not fixed yet!?!

Good post, Law138

Aw man not again. Im starting to get that stupid, "Please put disk in 360" message. The last two times that happen I got the red rings shortly after. I don't think I can deal with returning a third console...... I mean come on one was more than enough. It really says something about your company if my Atari 2600 a console older than me is still functional but a console that's not even two years old keeps on dying. Wake up M$ at this rate I wont buy your next Xbox till it's 5 years in it's life cycle.

Giff1988

Yeah that is ridiculous. I'm surprised more hasn't been made out of this in the main stream media. I mean M$ is one of the richest and best known companies in the world and yet it has been selling a product for almost two years that has as much as a 30% failure rate!

When are M$ going to say clearly that they have identified the problem and fixed it? That's the day I'll eagerly buy a 360 and a truck load of games!!

Hello everyone,

My Xbox recently gave me the dreaded red ring of death. I have sent it to be fixed, however, I am thinking of selling it and buying a new one with the new cooling system/65nm processor.

However, I have a few questions:

- Are they out yet/when will they be out? (I heard they were out in July, not sure though :?)

- By how much do the new Xboxes eliminate the chance of getting the ring of death?

- I am thinking of buying the core as I already have an extra 20 GB hard disk lying around unused. I heard they have stopped manufacturing the core/the core will not include the 65nm processors and cooling system. Is this true?

- I live overseas, and it is cheaper for me to order it from the internet rather than buying it from here. However, websites like amazon.com do not list a manufacture date, and I want to check the manufacture date to make sure I get the 65nm console. Are there any other websites that sell the system and list the manufacture date? Or is there an alternative way to find out? (I tried contacting amazon.com, but there was no use :().

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

mon_bus

These are good questions. Anyone got any answers? I still have not heard that the the 65nm chips are definately being used yet, just rumours. Anybody have any more info?

Thanks.

I'm just trying to hold out until MS does an actual recall so I can just enjoy my 360. Yeah things break but this whole situation is insane. If something breaks that's ok just make sure that what you send me back won't break again soon for the exact same reason. I can't imagine it's even financially viable to just keep pumping out repairs that don't really fix anything. About the only thing that annoys me more than the RROD is stupid people who try and blame the owners for the problem by asking about ventialtion and crap like that. Some people do abuse their systems to be sure but my system and the systems of all4 of my 360 owning friendswere treated like little kings. All 4 systems were all alone with their power units sitting in the open and 2 of them were hardly used. Mine gets about 8-10 hrs a week max use and I'm on #2. I was hoping to get an Elite thinking that would fix the problem but somehow they managed to put out a second faulty system. The worst part of all of this is how disappointed I am with the whole situation. My friends have all dumped their refurb 360's they received and bought PS3's. They're urging me to do the same but I'd rather have no system at all then have a PS3. So the decision is have a system that has no comparison when it comes to games but breaks every 2 weeks or have a reliable system with no games. The situation is bad now but I can't wait to see what happens as Bioshock picks up steam and Halo 3 drops. With the amazing graphics it will tax the system farther than it's gone so far and the systems will really begin to crash. Just recall them already so I can get on with my gaming life.

hoeycow

My sentiments exactly! It is truely amazing that M$ hasn't fixed this problem properly yet. The 360 has been out since 2005 and literally millions have broken since then so they must know the real reason/reasons and should be capable of fixing it properly. The 3 year warranty doesn't really cut it. It's a real hassle and annoying to go through the repair process ( often multiple times ). What M$ needs is a bit of respect for its customers. A system that meets at least average levels of reliabilty is something every consumer has a right to demand and expect.

I posted about my first 360 receiving the Red Lights of Death earlier in this thread, and since receiving the replacement, I'm continuing to have issues, mostly "Disc Unreadable" messages that pop up quite frequently. Dead Rising was the last straw though, as I just bought a brand new copy of the game and throughout my time with it, I've run into literally dozens of these errors. Fed up, I filed a complaint with the BBB yesterday...

...and got a call from Microsoft today. A few snippets from the call (paraphrased, of course) that some of you might find interesting.

On owning multiple consoles and gaming for over 20 years...
Me: I mean, c'mon... I've been gaming for over 20 years and I've never, never experienced problems like this! Even my original PS2, which started having problems after about 6 months, never outright died on me.
MS: I can certainly understand that, as I also have a lot of consoles around. I also had to replace my original PS2 due to the disc drive problems, but my Genesis, my Super Nintendo, all that stuff is still running great. I haven't picked up a 360 yet, but I've been meaning to.

On warranties and what they do/don't cover...
MS: We'd also like you to know that concerning the three red lights error, the warranty was extended from 1 year to 3 years.
Me: Your phrasing of that makes me kind of wary... what about the disc drive problems? Is that covered under the new warranty?
MS: No, the disc drives are still subject to the original 1 year warranty.
Me: So what happens after that 1 year mark? I'm just out of luck?
MS: Well, there would be a fee to replace it, but I can assure you that it would be well under 100 dollars.
Me: So after a year of owning a $400-500 console that I've barely been able to play due to problems, and a month or so of not being able to play it due to replacements, I'd have to pay more after January? That just sounds like I'm being screwed.

On "fixing" those nasty design flaws I keep talking about...
Me: It's the principle of it, though. I'm on my 2nd, possibly going on 3rd console, and feel like I'm caught in a vicious cycle.
MS: Well, I can certainly understand your concerns. One thing our support department is doing is making corrections when damaged consoles come in to ensure that problems don't occur again in the future and you can stop that vicious cycle.
Me: Like what? Gluing the heatsinks down to prevent them from popping off the motherboard when it starts to warp due to heat problems?
MS: I've also heard that rumor, but I'm not sure what they do over there to fix things. They just tell us that they are taking steps to ensure the problems don't happen again. What I can tell you is that I can refer you to the support department and they can replace your current console with an improved one.
Me: Aren't they just sending out refurbished models? There's nothing to ensure that I'm actually getting a model that's been subject to those corrections, so yet again, I'm caught in that same cycle. Honestly, about the only thing that would retain my business would be to receive a brand new, retail unit.
MS: I can confirm that your replacement was a refurbished model, but if you contact support, you can talk to a supervisor and certainly request to try and have a new console order placed, but I really can't guarantee anything since I don't know what their exact process is.

I have a distinct feeling that this incident will be either ignored entirely or escalated further up the chain. He offered to start a support ticket to replace it, but I opted not to, since he called me and I didn't want to give out anything personal. They apparently keep their own trouble ticket #'s for these calls though, as he gave me a BBB confirmation # used specifically within Microsoft to refer to the case. Maybe if/when I do call their support line, that will have an impact on the outcome of that call.

filterpunk

Good job referring them to the BBB. If more people did this M$ might get round to actually making reliable hardware.

I got my Xbox 360 back today. It only took a day to ship to me. Question the 4 green lights don't all light up only 3 is that normal?

13and0

Nope. Something is wrong and I suggest that if you live in the US, don't put up with MS, file a complaint with your state's BBB or with the AG's office. I'm plannig on finding out the EXACT 65nm release date and getting one then. If you don't wanna be too harsh, I reccomend doing the same, just like over 1 million would be or will be 360 owners.

I'm going to do the same. Let us know when you find out the 65nm release date, please!

[QUOTE="pungaboy"]So does anybody know if Microsquish is replacing RROL consoles with the new HDMI, 65nm, quiet DVD drive 360s yet? It seems like this would be advantageous to them seeing as how it's cheaper to manufacture and it's a cooler-running chipset that's less likely to fail in the future... But has anybody gotten one of those ones back yet? Or seen anything anywhere about this? My 360 just failed and I'm wondering if I should delay sending it in for a couple weeks...Obi-Wan678

Might was well send it, MS isn't going to publically announce when the 65nm chip will be released, we'll only find out if someone cracks it open and finds out.

True, M$ are unlikely publically announce from when 65nm chips will be used as everybody will want one and stores won't be able to shift the old ones ( I think M$ should recall/replace old stock in stores when 65nm goes full time - but unlikely! )

Hopefully someone or a gaming site... Hey, Gamespot!?!.... will do a bit of research and open a few of the new ones to find out.
