playing this on x360 i'm happy to say there's finally a true alternative to FIFA for me. sure it has its flaws but overall i pretty much enjoy it.
as for all the arguments going on in the comments section about which game is perfect, i'll let you in on a secret: neither one is! simple logic: if either one was a truly perfect and flawless representation of football there wouldn't be arguments in the comment sections. however, if anyone has found his or her personal perfect game in any of PES' or FIFA's recent or older versions, then good for him/her.
the question of which one is superior then? well, it all comes down to personal preference. me, i prefer PES, simply because i can deal with its flaws better than with FIFA's and i enjoy the PES style more. but there is no rational or logic reason to try and convince anyone of MY personal preferences. i can recommend PES as i would do with a book or a movie i personally like. but to criticise someone who does not share one's personal preferences (yes, i'm looking at lal_skl's 'i know what's best' posts and also those who bash him/her in return) is just... ignorant, irritating, and ultimately pointless. those who prefer FIFA should play FIFA, those who like PES should play PES, those who like both should consider a divorce and those who dislike them both should hope for decent weather and some pals to play the real deal. peace
according to this reviewer it's "a fundamentally different experience to last year's game" with "subtle(!) refinements and clever tweaks(!)" - what's fundamentally different about that?
oh wait, on top of that this game gets an 8.0, WHICH IS EXACTLY THE RATING THE SAME REVIEWER GAVE FIFA 13 (check it!), WHICH (DOUBLE CAPITALISED) ACCORDING TO THE VERY SAME REVIEWER "ISN'T ALL THAT DIFFERENT FROM LAST YEAR'S [fifa 12] OUTING (his words, check it, first sentence!!)" ??!?!?? please sir, this is not my notion of "fundamentally different".
interesting. i'm curious how the gaming industry (looking at you, M$) is going to try to justify DRM, used games blocking etc. next, now that GTA5 has proven games can still do a ridiculously insane amount of money despite all those features still prevalent. i really am curious...
I have only played the demo (both PEs and FIFA) so far and i wasn't sure whether to buy the full PES game or not, but this review has finally convinced me to GO FOR IT.
"PES 2014 moves ever closer towards simulation, and in doing so forgets exactly what makes the series so different and so much fun in the first place."
"fun" is subjective, whereas "realism" is not. one has fun collecting stamps, while the other goes for a base jump. however, the realism of a simulation is somewhat objective since we can compare a game's realism to a real football match. Assuming Mr W has already seen a live game of footy on TV i believe him saying this game is more realistic than PES before (to the point where casual arcade gamers might think it's too difficult and frustrating because not every pass or build up is a success?). "When it does all come together, though, PES 2014 can be a wonderful thing. Zipping down the right wing to launch a well-placed cross, or ducking through the midfield with a killer through ball, is nicely fast-paced and, at times, edge-of-your-seat thrilling. Finishing those manoeuvres remains as tight as ever, with a real feeling of control as you expertly blast a shot past the keeper and into the top corner of the net. The excellent jockeying and tactical positioning in defence, the dribbling system, and the shot modifiers all make a welcome return, too, with improved player-contact animations seeing players fight for the ball--and lose it--in a much more compelling way than before." QED, thanks.
So my interpretation of this review: PES 2014 is more realistic than e.g. PES 2013. That's all i needed to know for my decision.
Final verdict: i absolutely agree with Mr W.'s rating of only 6.0, because i also feel that this year FIFA is in urgent need of an enormous headstart ;-) Oh and Mr W., in the upcoming FIFA review, please don't forget to take the "automated nature of FIFA" into account that you mention in this review; you know, credibility and such...
nope, xbox 360... so you see i'm not biased towards neither ps4 nor Xb1
BUT i fear that both next gen systems could mean the end or at least a significant change in business models like gamestop and many others; that's when people may start losing their jobs...
@Cobra5 / @c905492 etc. think of it like this: 'creator' gets money for selling new to 'a gamer' => 'a gamer' gets money for selling used to '2ndhandshop (2hs)' => '2hs' gets money for selling used to 'me'. recap: '2hs' gets money, 'a gamer' gets money, 'creator' gets money, even 'me' gets money (not paying full price). now backtrack without the used games option: 'me' can't give money to '2hs' => '2hs' can't give money to 'a gamer' => 'a gamer' can't afford full price games => 'creator' must be darn lucky to sell a single game. recap: 'me' keeps money, '2hs' gets no money, 'a gamer' gets no money, 'creator' gets no money. conclusion: 'creator' gets money even from second hand games (yes, only indirectly and maybe less than expected *cough* greed? *cough, cough*). drop the second hand market and 'creator' will most likely dream about earning as much as they do today.
