Do you whine about every genre you don't like because you can't pay for/are bad at?
-Unreal-
You're actually quite correct in your bluntness. I tried playing EverQuest for about an hour and a half and I sucked. (I'm guessing you might not be old enough to remember EQ). I also didn't want to pay them the $10 bucks every month so I cancelled before my free month was up.
Yes... I DO understand they are a company's wet dream. I just can't beleieve there are enough players out there to keep so many of them afloat. I personally only know one guy who's in to them and he maxed out his WoW character years ago.
But I would argue against that they are nearly risk-free for a company. There HAS to be a limited amount of dedicated MMO players... and pulling them away from the familiarity of the game they are playing, the attachmnent to the characters they've created and the friends they've made and quest with HAS to be a daunting task.
MANY MMOs fail. So now the companies have decided to take the worlds they know gamers love (KotOR, Elder Scrolls) and woo the public with those. I'm fully expecting a Mass Effect announcement within the next two years. Why? Because EA owns BioWare now. :-p
