mortal kombat, had the crazy ninja's, all the characters had correct origins etc. Hitman and Resident evil are quite good too, though re:extinction took it a little far...

they keep selling because a) its a safe bet b) you can do alot with story elements rather than focus on switching a obviously winnig formula c) people already know how to play them, and have since doom. I grant you, gameplay hasnt changed that much, but do you really think companies will stop making guarented sellers because they cant change the gameplay much? i dont think so, if people buy them, they will make them.

Personally I think that all the hating of FPS's should stop, they a stable of the gaming scene, some are genuinely awesome and they make it easy for other people to see how they are played and get into games if they so choose. Plus, if they stop selling, e-sports will take a major hit. Not saying your opinion is wrong, just you dont seem to have really thought about it.

When you think about it, this is already happening, but in a different way. Meaning, we're seeing old ideas recycled but with a fresh coat of paint. It's like making a Godzilla movie but calling it something else and remade for the new century...oh wait! :P
