The Wii is doing very well, yes. But what people on here seem to forget is that Nintendo currently has a price advantage as well as word of mouth going for it. Will the Wii remain the hot item as it continues to age? What about when the 360 and PS3 come down in price in a year or two and are much closer to the magic number for most consumers? What about when the graphical capabilities of the Wii really catch up with it? The 360 and PS3 will continue to get games that look significantly better than the Wii and that advantage will widen as this gen goes on. Coupled with the reduction in price, as well as the novelty of the Wii wearing off, and my prediction for this gen is much different than most people on these boards.
The Wii may pass the 360 in total worldwide sales soon, but in the end my guess is that all three consoles will be fairly close in sales (within spitting distance). The Wii is hot now, but as HD penetration continues as well as prices drop, and Blue-ray disc become more widely available and cheaper, the PS3 will start to pick up the sales. The 360's biggest hurdle right now is PR. Alot of the gaming public has lost confidence in the 360 due to shotty hardware despite the superior online functionality and large software library.
All three companies will learn some serious lessons this gen, that will hopefully allow us as gamers to benefit.
- Sony has learned that price is important
- MS has learned that reliability is important,
- And my guess is that by the end of the gen, Nintendo will learn that graphics are still somewhat important to gamers
All three will mean that the next next gen systems will be cheaper, more relieable, while maintaining a nice graphical quality.
