@Cruisemissile You can buy businesses. You don't really "run" them, but they bring you a weekly profit and might occasionally call you and ask if you can help out with something (you can say no without penalty).

@Sky_Stifler You'll definitely need to spend some time playing as Trevor if you want to advance through the story. If you're more interested in just exploring the world and doing other stuff, you can pretty much avoid it.

@MrWhalo You can read texts and emails, call cabs, emergency services, friend characters to go out drinking, go to movies, go do activities or what have you. And you can browse the internet, where you can invest in stocks.

@Dragerdeifrit To be honest, I didn't try every activity with every character, but I never ran into a situation where I couldn't do an activity as a specific character. Some businesses, however, can only be purchased by certain characters.

@Sky_Stifler It depends how interested you are in advancing the story. Moving the story forward requires switching between the characters fairly often, since even though they work together on many missions, they also have missions they need to do on their own. But when you're not moving the story forward, you can of course play with any one character to your heart's content.

@WiredSternum283 When you switch to a character, you do find them going about their lives. Sometimes they're doing something ordinary. Sometimes they might be in a car chase. Sometimes (especially in the case of Trevor), they might be doing something REALLY weird. It's a lot of fun at times to switch to a character and just see what they're up to.
