Halo is seen as a leader of AI? What the #$%? If that were the case, 1) why don't they have multiplayer bots, 2) Why does NOBODY say it's a leader of AI, and 3) Why does EVERYBODY say that Unreal Tournament IS the leader?

I think Fable is the worst offender of this. God or Bad, Good or Bad... it's as simplistic as a Choose your own Adventure, and no more complex than say, the road route variation in Outrun. The problem is it pretends to be so much more. Did Outrun use different routes as a selling point? Of course not, because it's insignificant next to the overall gameplay. When you're waxing lyrical about your game's good or bad choice system, you're basically saying that's the part of your game you are most proud of. Not really the best of ideas.

Pratchett's got the right idea. Anyone saying that games can't or won't convey a compelling story needs to go and play Mafia and seriously shut the bleep up. When you see a man who's survived multiple assassination attempts try to sit calmly in the back of his car but has a single involuntary eye twitch, you'll understand the strain he's under. When you see a man fall in love with a woman in the game, you really believe it. Games don't HAVE to have a strong story, but they CAN, and should be taken as serious storytelling platforms when they put the effort in. Interactivity isn't a disadvantage if handled properly, any more than having viewable deleted scenes of a movie changes the overall experience.

Would it kill Gamespot to stop faffing about and put everything on a single page once in a while?

kitakitachuta, GTA3 didn't lay the foundation for the series, the original GTA did. Isn't that obvious? And I'll never really be able to take this greatest games list seriously until Goldeneye 007 is put on it. Conker's Bad Fur Day should really be on it too...

1. Goldeneye 007 (N64)- no shooter has ever had a finer balance of excellent single player and multiplayer. On any platform. 2. Star Wars TIE Fighter: Collector's CD-ROM (PC)- One could not possibly ask for more in a dogfighting game. Except perhaps better graphics. And 3rd person. Shut up! 3. Unreal Tournament 2004 (PC)- As much as I'd love to put Battlefield 1942 in (Assuming my exile starts now, bf'42 is the closest the battlefield series has got to a complete game. Besides, the era is better and you can still have epic bot battles) I'd have to go with UT, for it's sheer variety, attention to detail and brilliant bots provide the most varied FPS experience known. It also has a great mod community. 4. Mafia (PC) The most deep, immersive and rewarding free-roaming action game around. GTA is fun in bursts. Mafia is good for hours. Either that or Just Cause, which isn't out yet. 5. Driver (PS1) No game has brought me into a hollywood movie better than this game. Every single time you start playing you know you're in for an awesome time.
