@Terrorantula: That one word says it all. Everything Disney has done to this franchise has been a travesty. Legends (EU) is the continuation of the saga that I will only ever acknowledge.
@Gelugon_baat: Of course core gameplay can't be changed. But if you read the review, that didn't seem to be his problem. He seemed to enjoy it at its "core". Most of his gripes are in the last paragraph, and in the good/bad part at the bottom. Most of those "bad" points can be fixed with server settings. Except story and repetition. But that should be common sense with this genre. And if that is what you want in a game, then this game won't be for you.
@Gelugon_baat: And that's fine. Not every game is for everyone. I just want to point out to those on the fence about this game that his gripes are easily fixed. I was on the fence for this game for a long time. I regret not getting it sooner. I'm one of the unfortunate slubs who had to pay full price. Not that I regret it. But I was sure worried that I would.
@Louis : Another way to do that save trick would be to open the console and type in; saveworld. Then you can just Alt-Tab out and copy your save. You'd avoid having to go through the load screen that way.
I love this game. I've only played solo, so I have no experience with the online aspect. I have the settings set to what fits my style of play. It helps with the grind. Almost every gripe the reviewer had with this game can be fixed/altered in the server settings. And if you don't want to random spawn when you die, build a bed. There are few games that I put over 200 hours in. Looking at my Steam library, there are only 3 out of the 60 games that I have with over 200 hours play time. And after this weekend, I'm sure ARK will become my most played game on Steam.
I was on the fence about this game for a while. I decided to try the demo, and I was surprised by how much it offered. 5 hours later I realize I'm really enjoying the game. I rarely enjoy FPS's. I don't know why Destiny is fun/different. Maybe it's the rush I get when I finish a really hard fight by the skin of my teeth. Though given my limited skills in FPS's, I wonder how hard these fights are for veterans of the genre. Regardless, I felt like a badass when the bullets stopped flying, and I was still standing. I can see the repetition becoming a problem, so I doubt I'll stick with it past 20+ hours. But this game is an online game. It can evolve over time and I do see myself coming back to it periodically to see what's changed. The gameplay is solid. It's the mission structure that needs some tweaking.
My greatest struggle with a captain was one that was invulnerable to range, melee, and stealth. The only way to hurt him was with Combat Finishers or fire, and I didn't have access to the latter. It was a long, long fight, but when I got him it felt amazing. This game is so much fun. Like a lot of the people in the video, I've barely touched the main story. I've been getting by with the basic skills, though I've accumulated enough Power to unlock tier 2 skills. But I think I will focus on story to finally unlock some of those skills. To be able to counter caragors will be nice. Those nasty f***ers scare me. I'm sure about 90% of my deaths have been from trying to find an effective technique to combat them, with no luck. One-on-one isn't usually a problem, but they are almost never alone.
That combat looked extremely tedious. Was that 200+ hits to take down a single opponent? While I'm probably just enough of a perv to enjoy such a game (lol), those fights looked like they'd drive me crazy.
