@Decessus Of course no-one is forcing me but I'm just saying I don't understand why people would be stupid and blindly-loyal enough to pay for a game before it even exists. I'd rather just let things work the normal way where I pay for a game when I know it is good especially with a company like Obsidian who is known for making buggy games.

@ApocaLeepse @Decessus Normally gamers don't pay for a game before it actually exists. Normally we wait and see if the game is good before giving them our money. That is how it is different.

@Stiler @Decessus Obsidian have made bad games before, the only difference this time is that the overly loyal fans will be the ones who miss out and Obsidian will still have 1.1m profit.

@Decessus @ApocaLeepse Because once they have your money they have won. If they make a bad game then they still have everyone's money and they lost nothing, if they make a good game they will make a ton of extra money and every bit of it will be profit. The traditional publisher method works because the publishers fund it knowing that they will get a cut of the profit in return, something which people donating to a successful dev like Obsidian don't.

@ApocaLeepse @Decessus Yeah, good point. But they still actually need to market the game whereas with KickStarter projects they just need to provide a product that resembles what they originally claimed they would do and your money is theirs. I honestly don't mind when small indie developers, who can't attract the attention of big publishers but I know that Obsidian could easily get a publisher on board but its easier to just trick fans into paying for it instead.

@Decessus Yes but when the gamers are the ones paying for the game, they are the ones who suffer if the game is awful because Obsidian already has our money and has lost nothing whereas a traditionally funded game relies on sales so it actually needs to be good.

I know Obsidian aren't the biggest game producers but they aren't exactly a small time indie dev. I don't understand why it has suddenly become acceptable gamers to pay companies to make games that gamers will later be paying AGAIN to play.
