The same thing evidently happened with Peter Jackson and The Lord of the Rings.
I will say the one thing that George Lucas was best at was choosing space ships designs. He has an incredible eye for industrial design and what works on the big screen. You can see the new folks and Disney are scared/intimidated by that legacy and not even trying to come up with new designs, instead just copy pasting the X-wing, TIE, and Falcon again. McQuarrie helped draw those ships but Lucas originally picked them out among the hundreds of design concepts.
If you've been following this new movie, you'd see it's even less innovative than the prequels... same spaceships (Falcon, X-wing, TIEs), same enemy ("evil" white empire), same starts on a desert planet then goes to a frozen and forest one....
If Nolan directed Star Wars, we'd get the Inception horn when the STAR WARS title appeared, the whole trilogy would've been set in the Coruscant underworld, the action scenes and light saber battles would've been choppy and hard to follow, and Darth Vader would've been retconned to have Throat Cancer.
Funny how the next news article down is about Resident Evil 6, and how Capcom is porting it to yet more systems rather than pulling it and issuing refunds.
