Just ordered the parts for my new PC. Is the Core i5's stock heatsink good? I'm not overclocking it, so the main thing is that it's quiet and doesn't let the CPU get too hot.

Also, I hear that it has some thermal paste pre-applied, but I have some OCZ Freeze thermal paste (used when upgrading my old PC) - would this be worth using instead?

BTW this is the specification of my new PC: Core i5 750 CPU, Asus P7P55D motherboard, 4gb DDR3 RAM @1333mhz (1.5v), XFX HD 5770 GPU, 525w Enermax Modu 82+ PSU, Antec 300 case (witha front fan added) + Seagate 500gb 7200.12 HDD.

Thanks.

I wouldn't recommend using the stock, it will work but this is cheap and it's much quieter and easy to installhttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835186134&cm_re=artic_freezer_7-_-35-186-134-_-Product

Hi so I was considering upgrading to this from stock cooling on and AMD AM2+ 940 quad core processor. Question 1 will my temps improve a lot? Also will I have to you a backplate or remove anything on an AM2+ mobo Also for now I won't be overclocking but I'm considering it due to the price and the stock amd cooler makes an annoying buzzing noise.http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835186134

are you sure it's the stock cooler that's making the noise? Could be one of your case fans. But anyway an aftermarket CPU cooler is always welcome. However, I'd advise you wait until black friday just to see which coolers they have on sale ;). I shall be on Newegg on Black Friday and Cyber Monday! :D

Yeah I opened the case, it's for sure, the thing I like about this cooler is it's easy to mount(no backplate) and the silicon fan has excellent anti vibrations properties, while the stock doesn't b/c it's just plastic.

Hm I would recommend cleaning off the thermal grease, and applying new grease and reseating the heatsink.

This isa good build the only thing I would suggest is switch the video card to GTS 250 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814162034cheaper and better.Or if you wan an ATI card go with the 4850(equal to GTS 250)http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150337&cm_re=4850-_-14-150-337-_-Productonly $5 more than the 4770.Also Ultimate gamer I'm curoius why you refer to yourself in the 3rd person, for example "Ultimate Gamer will build you a system". Just curious, it reminds me of a funny Seinfeld episode I saw.

or this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103724

I have the first in my computer, but am building another computer for someone and I can swap it out for the second.

Well the first one is dual core and the second is triple core so your gaining one cpu core if you switch. Not a bad trade off, don't expect anything drastic changing though there both budget cpus.

Just play it safe and pick up a reliable corsair brand psu http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139009 If you can spend that much on graphics cards you can splurge for a better psu.

[QUOTE="Luminouslight"]I don't understand how the mounting mechanism of the am2 could block RAM slots because it's just a clip.sihunt

Hi Well what happens when you use the AMD clip(The cooler comes with the hardware to do so.) The cooler is mounted horizontally. That means it's 120mm across and the cooler will extend over the rams slots. This is fine as long as you aren't using ram with the tall cooling heatsinks as they might not clear the bottom of the cooler. Also when the cooler is mounted horizontally, ideally you want a case that has a top exhaust fan. When the cooler is mounted vertically,it aligns with the rear ehaust cooler on the case.

I have these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231166&cm_re=g_askill_1066-_-20-231-166-_-Productinstalled on the closest slots to the cpu on this mobo http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138143&cm_re=biostar_790gx-_-13-138-143-_-ProductShould I still get the extra mounting bracket?
