Conservative ideology is probably more "to each their own". The problem is a lack of a safety net and proper guidelines for fairness. The trouble with any merit based system is that the best, brightest, most industrious, and also some with luck will tend to continue to distance themselves from the less talented. It's like a race. The fastest people keep getting further and further ahead the more you let them run. sonicare

Why is that a problem? What compels the "best, brightest, most industrious" individuals to limit themselves in accordance with those who are less talented?

Not that I can think of, but I have gone for a handshake when the other person was going for a fist bump.
