Games You Should Definitely Play

Dragon Age: Origins

The epic storyline, fantastic art direction, and strategic cinematic combat make this game my top game of all time. Branching storylines, multiple origins, and the ability to create your own character made this game an RPG with lots of replayability. In addition, the fanbase had provided some of the best mods to date for enhancing a game for the PC release of this game. Check out Dragon Age: Redesigned, Combat Tweaks, and everything by Jake Zahn.

Mass Effect

The game that wowed and amazed us all when it came out. Playing on PC, this game transported us to new worlds around many galaxies. I still remember when I first ventured out in the Mako and realized, I'm driving a rover in space. If you are a fan of branching storylines, epic stories with fantastic voice acting, anything else created by Bioware, or Star Wars, this should be on the top of your 'to play' list.

FTL: Faster Than Light

FTL brought something new to the scene with something many of us never knew we wanted so bad. A brutally difficult rogue-like that finally let us all realize our fantasies of commanding a starship like in Star Trek where we managed multiple systems including weapons, shields, engines, power distribution, etc. Featuring beautiful sprites and a gorgeous soundtrack, I highly recommend this game.

Urban Reign

An under-appreciated action brawler from the PS2 era. It featured a robust counter system that was difficult to master, but incredible rewarding once perfected. The game was originally given a low score due to the high difficulty of the game, but therein also lies it's strength. Once you mastered the combat system you could score an S-ranking on levels nearly every time, and that is where the satisfaction lies. It won't hold your hand, but if you're punching things in the face, you won't want them held anyways. Recommended for fans of Tekken, the Brawler.

Warframe

If you're a fan of co-operative 3rd person shooters, this one is top of my list for action combat these days. Featuring a robust array of Mass Effect/Star Wars-like powers, this game takes the best of those universes and adds ninja-like speed and movement abilities to the mix, making wall running and slide dashing the norm. If you're a fan of loots fest and co-operative combat, this action combat game features some great fast paced sci-fi action. Looks fantastic with a PhysX enabled graphics card.

Mass Effect 2

Improved upon Mass Effect and continued the epic story. Featured better combat, some fantastic moments with paragon/renegade trigger reactions mid dialogue, and introduced some of the most memorable characters in the Mass Effect trilogy.

Mass Effect 3

The game who took Mass Effect to the next level, and spawned a massive controversy with it's terrible ending. While this game stripped down some of the RPG aspects of the previous titles, it featured the best combat system to date, and an amazing multiplayer experience.

Sid Meier's Civilization IV

The game that finally perfected the Civilization formula and whose community brought us some of the best Civilization mods to date, including Fall from Heaven, which added new mechanics to the core Civilization experience and made the best Civilization I've played to date.

Guild Wars 2

The best MMO I have played to date. Using a pay-once, free-to-play forever model, it's an easy value proposition to suggest considering how much content is packed in this game. Featuring absolutely stunning visual design and an action combat system that makes the old, stale World of Warcraft style combat seem a thing of times long past, Guild Wars 2 is my preferred MMO of choice. Well, ever since City of Heroes shut down, which was the best MMO ever!

Final Fantasy X

One of the first games I remember playing that featured full voice acting for the entire game, and while some things have improved since the era this game was created in, it's hard to deny how much of a masterpiece it was, and how well it still holds up. It features that classic Final Fantasy turn-based combat system that allows you to strategically plan your attacks without the pressure of a timer. Also boasting an epic storyline and some of our most memorable characters, this game is one to play.

Rayman Legends

Now perhaps the best platformer available for PC platforms. Rayman Legends improves upon everything established before and showcases the beautiful UbiArt that makes these cartoony characters come to life.

The Secret of Monkey Island

If you were a fan of the original as a child, this remake of the game features exactly that, the original game toggle-able at any moment as well as the spot-on perfect voice actor of later Monkey Island titles. Also featuring completely redone artwork for the entire game (again, can toggle back to original artwork if you wish), this is everything you could possible want from a remake of the original.

Rogue Legacy

Recently my brother asked me after playing Mega Man on NES, 'I like the old games, what new games do you think I would like?' and immediately I thought of Rogue Legacy. It's a side scrolling action platformer roguelike-like where you delve into a dungeon to try and get as far as you can. However, unlike pure roguelikes, you can level up your 'heirs' (your next character after you permanently die) for their next run. It's a great mix of the 'everything I do really matters' of old school difficult platformers and the new paradigm of 'when I play, I achieve progress' school of gaming. If you enjoy those old school games, this game might in fact, hook you.

Approachable CCG that is free to play and worth the try. Engrossing.
