Part of the fun for me is knowing that all of the hard work will eventually pay off. :P You could say the fun comes from knowing what will happen next, as opposed to what you're doing to make that happen.
I guess that the challenge itself could be what produces the fun. But if the level of challenge is too high, then the game isn't fun anymore, and the same could be said about the game lacking too much challenge. ;)
