Either of your descriptions would be an oversimplification. On economics, typically what is considered left would involve more government control and what is further right, less government control. The opposite holds true on social issues.

Of course it isn't perfect, both groups tend to break the rules in some way (ie liberals with gun control, conservatives with military spending). What I find interesting is that for the last 30-40 years rebublicans have always increased government spending and the size of government and democrats have reduced it. Of course Obama is the exceptiong, but that is due to the dilemma of a failing economy. Either way, what gets me is that conservatives still shout that dems will take control of our lives and increas government while history clearly shows the people they plan to vote for are far more guilty and likely of doing that. apparently controlling people's lives requires a larger infrastructure than managing the economy.
