+1 for The Witcher and -1 to Gamespot for not even having it on the list. Hardly surprising though...tis time I deleted a bookmark.

Stalker looks like a decent game, and is $30 on steam. Is it worth it?coolmonkeykid

I'd say it's well worth it. If you do get it, you might like to also download the "Redux" mod from here: http://z4.invisionfree.com/STALKERRE/index.php?act=idx

I've also made a HUD mod which you can find on the same site - look under 'releases' and use the 'search for posts from the beginning option'. I've been working on an 'Extreme' version of Redux (which is a 'realism' mod) for about 6 months now and it's nearing completion. Will be worth checking out. ;)

For role playing purposes:

Planescape: Torment

Most of the Ultima series (several games are now on DOSBox)

Most of the King's Quest series (several games are now on DOSBox)

Baldur's Gate series + Icewind Dale series (don't forget the free expansion which can be d/led online)

Gothic series (Hands down the most enjoyable RPGs I've ever played - though Gothic 3 excluded much of the 'awe' of the previous games - be sure to look up Gothic II: Night of the Raven as well)

The Elder Scrolls (all of the games 'before' Morrowind were very good - I think Arena is also freeware now)

Sacred series (the Gold box can be had for about $5 - and it'll take months to traverse the game. It's not steeped in story but is definitely worth including if only for the huge land mass and thousands of items)

Falllout series (with the exception of 'Tactics' which was fairly 'blunt')

For Real Time/Turn Based Strategy purposes:

A list the suits your request could include almost every game ever created from these genres so I'll only list the ones that I enjoyed:

Soldiers: Heroes of World War II

Silent Storm series

Sudden Strike series

There's no mention of "Ganja Farmer" in that list which leads me to believe that none of it was researched.

^ Try and tell me that ain't controversial - look at all of those police resources being wasted there! If the cops left poor John Parker alone, maybe some real crime would get solved...like the 'new' O.J.Simpson thing...

I finally got it running after a few headaches with securerom and my plextor drives.

Its ok i guess. My only problem is i have a really hard time enjoying games under 60fps. With the computer i have i should easily get that on any setting and i dont ( no im not using vista). Its frustrating and makes it almost impossible to enjoy a game that otherwise feels like a good game.

Ive opted to just not play it anymore untill they patch it a few times and take care of all the optimization problems. Im sure i'll enjoy it more if i just wait for fixes.

Alter_Echo

Or, you could quit moaning about frame rates and upgrade your hardware. I have E6600/2GB Corsair/eVGA 8800GTX & S.T.A.L.K.E.R. runs flawlessly.

If those of you who maon about graphics while running prehistoric hardware weren't so pathetic, I'd almost feel sympathetic.

You thinking about posting back now "Alter_Echo" with: Blah blah I have 8800GTX SLI blah blah - don't bother, I know that if you're witnessing slow-downs (mr less than 60fps) you're not even close to being on the forefront of hardware tech because S.T.A.L.K.E.R. also runs very nicely on 7800GTX SLI.

Yes, that AI has it bugs but if anyone can name a single game that also shows brillance* like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. has done, I'll eat my own earwax.

*No-one who has played the game can claim that they went right through without seeing some very, very impressive AI.

Both GTR2 and Undying SHOULD (and likely will) make the top 50.

Silent Storm won't but should.
Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic won't but should.
Tron 2.0 won't but should.

None of the Gothic games will accquire a spot either. Obviously, the placement of Gothic 3 in the top 50 would be blashpemy but either one of its predeccessors deserves a spot.

Great old games shouldn't be remade, they were perfect and dont want them to be ruined.

Why not remake **** games and make them good?

Terrorantula

I used to also feel this way until I relaized that if a great game was simply re-created on a new game engine, it has the potential to be a true pleasure.

Imagine System Shock 1&2 on the Unreal 3 Engine. Done right (i.e. ONLY the graphics are touched) it could be truly amazing. The right developer could do this. In this case it would need to be Looking Glass/Irrational, though unfortunately, now that they don't have the rights, it'll never happen.

Certain games couldn't really be re-created without losing their edge. Flashback comes to mind - but how would a developer turn a side-scrolling adventure/shooter into something more than what it already is, without spoiling it.

Remaking **** games is a far better idea - Deus Ex: Invisible War done properly, would be a nice place to start.
