Makes sense to me. I would guess that most people are born with a conservative mindset. Fearing or disliking what is different and selfishly wanting all you can have at the expense of others. It takes a person who is intelligent enough to realize and accept the complex nature of society to move towards a more liberal mindset where everything is not so set in stone.
