I have been saving for quite a while, I have a couple of paychecks in the bank and can afford the laptop i have been longing for now for a few months, the M1530 XPS. I am going to be travelling in a couple of weeks time and staying with my Dad over in the US and I will be there for 6 weeks and basically won't have too much else to do, so its the perfect excuse for me to get one. Past my vacation I will be using it for taking to friends house's and such to help me work my way through a few PC games I recently bought. Plus it would help for University in the fall. This laptop will primarily be used for gaming and a general media centre for music as well, watching DVD's and running fairly demanding graphics/animation software for University.
I have an ok'ish knowledge about computers and specs (whats better etc..) I wanted to run the specs by you all before making my purchase, to see what you have to say.
Tuxedo Black Dell XPS M1530 -
- Intel C2duo T8300 (2.4GHz, 3MB l2 cache, 800 MHz FSB)
- 320GB 5400RPM HDD
- 4GB DDR2 667MHz
- Vista Premium
- Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT 256MB DDR3
It comes with everythine else, back-up discs and all the cool gadgets like the Dell Media remote, 2MPixel built-in webcam, Biometric Fingerprint Reader.
I just wonder would it be worth trading out the 320GB HDD for a 200GB HDD that is 7200 RPM? I figure that with the processer and 4gigs of RAM it wouldn't really matter.
Would it be worth getting Vista Ultimate? I have to be honest, I am an XP user and never looked into Vista but I know I will require it come the future and DX10 is supposedly better. Would Vista Ultimate be better for gaming?
I could also get a T9300 Core2duo processor that runs at 2.5GHz with a 6MB chache instead. Would this make a big difference?
If anybody replies get a desktop they clearly didn't read this and "Why buy a laptop when you get get an awesome desktop for that price!!" is a common response and usually I would agree but in this circumstance I am buying the laptop for the portability factor as I travel a lot visiting family and there are PLENTY of other instances where it would be VERY hand for me, and don't worry a serious gaming rig will be something I will be looking into doing sometime over the next couple of years.
Thank you all in advance. Your advice is appreciated :D
