Myself, being an absolute fanboy of Phoenix Wright, I must say that I wasn't really looking for improvements on gameplay mechanics or innovative tools. I was looking for progress in the writing and personality of the Phoenix Wright series. In this category (which is really what the game is all about) PW 2 is an amazing achievement. The stories are ambitiously crazy, and all of the new characters are integrated extremely well. The music, when compared to the first, is markedly better. Overall, if you played the first (which you really should before picking up the sequel) and loved it, then you'll wonder why Gamespot gave it a lower rating when the essentials of the Phoenix Wright series (the writing, humor and characters) are so brilliantly done.
