Grand theft auto..... on crack!!!

User Rating: 9.5 | Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction PS2
Mercenaries: Playground Of Destruction is set in North Korea, where Song, a North Korean diplomat has assassinated his father, the prime minister and set up a coup. The AN (Allied Nations) step in, and along with the Chinese, South Koreans and the Russians, march into North Korea to try and put a stop to Song's military regime.

You are a mercenary, who is hired by the AN to help arrest or kill the most wanted 52 men in Song's group who are all arranged much like a deck of cards much like the one used in the war on Iraq to help American soldiers remember who they are looking for. As the story progresses you will also have to work for the Russian Mafia, the South Koreans, and the Chinese (for a price of course) to help gain Intel on the 52 most wanted and also to strengthen your pacts with the various factions.

The depth of this game is quite astounding. You are able to go anywhere in a map about the size of any of the Grand Theft Auto Series, with forests, rivers, mountains and towns and cities with NO loading times as you move from city to city. To help you get around you are able to hijack locals cars, or different factions vehicles. Some examples are Cars, Trucks, Antiaircraft Missile Trucks, Tanks, Antiaircraft Tanks, Armored Personal Carriers (APC's), and even Helicopters. Also by using a factions vehicle, you are disguised as their fraction, so that they won't shoot at you. This system of disguise makes moving quickly around the battlefield while being undetected quite fun.

The weapons are really good too with assault rifles, SMGs, RPGs, Machine Guns and Sniper Rifles all making useful appearances.

The fact that you are able to physically attack a solider (or one of the 52) and take him down so that you can handcuff him is good to, because it allows you to pick him up and carry him around or place him in a Car or a Truck to make a quick getaway. This can allow you to get a safe distance away from the enemy and allow you to signal in a helicopter to pick up the precious 'cargo'. Of course keeping the most wanted alive gets you more dough, so you can't just go in guns blazing. You've got to take out his guards first and then you handcuff him.

The missions are good and original and keep the storyline and the mood of the game going. The graphics and clean and crisp, and the sound effects and sharp, while the soundtrack is a dramatic score which keeps the sense of tension in the air.

Although this game has an excellent single player aspect, it has no multiplayer. This is rather disappointing as most of the vehicles have two different seats (a driver and a gunner) but no co-op or deathmatch which i found was quite disappointing. This one downside would have added an extra 20 hours of fun game play onto an already fantastic game.

Overall an excellent achievement in gaming that Lucasarts and Pandemic studios ought to be proud of.
