Just another so-so shooter!

User Rating: 6 | Max Payne XBOX
Perhaps in its own right this game might be for the select few who really enjoy Third Person Shooters (TPS). I on the other hand found it tedious after awhile. Gameplay - At the begining of the game, your all pumped up because this game introduces some really cool concepts, namely 'Time Dodge' and 'Bullet Dodge'. Both of these features allow you to teporarily slow down time such that your character, Max Payne, can dodge bullets and more accurately take down his oppenents, a la Matrix style. The gameplay, however, takes a turn for the worse, when it seems that every level is the same. Sure, the location, in most cases, might be different, but how many times can you peek around corners, or run into a room, knowing that the bad guys are right there! The levels become predictable. Even the location of the Asprin (Max Payne uses Asprin as revitilatzation tool!) is the same. While there are numerous difficulty levels to play, I only played through once. That was about all that I could take. The concept of cutscenes is interesting. Rather than the traditional animated cutscene, each 'cutscene' is presented as a series of strips, similar to that of a comic book. There are individual panes along with bubble text and audio. At first I thought it a bit innovative, then annoying. There were times when the expressions on the characters faces were out of place, sort of tongue-in-cheek. I will hand it to the writer(s) however. The prose of the dialogue was very good. Sort of Marlowe like. Graphics - Average for a game released in 2001. There are a few instances of supernatural actions, such as suspended bodies in mid-air. Sound - Nothing memorable. Value - If you're the kind of person that likes to play TPSs, picking up unusual numbers of ammunition/weapons and blowing the oponents away and not careing about much else, then this game is perfect for you. Especially, since the game offers multiple difficulty levels. Conclusion - Definetly a rental, not a cheaper.
