I decided to pick this game up on Steam after seeing the positive reviews and feedback it was receiving. For $10 it is fantastic value for the hours of quality entertainment it provides. The game looks and plays relatively simple, with game play consisting of pointing and clicking your mouse on various crew members and equipment in your ship, however there is quite a bit to learn about how to maintain your ship's crew and systems. Mastering how to control your ship and crew effectively can take hours of getting blown up by enemy ships and having your crew members die. It is essentially a dungeon crawler in space, with random events occurring in each system you travel to. The game is surprisingly immersive, and actually reminded me a tad bit of Mass Effect, when you are travelling across solar systems and what not. FTL contains elements of both trial and error, luck and skill. Sometimes it may seem unfair when you get boarded by five enemies, and you only have three crew members to fight off the attackers. Other times however you may come across a large pile of scrap, (which can be used to purchase various items) or a powerful weapon. So for the most part the game tends to even out good and bad encounters fairly well. Skill comes into play when you are in a tough fight with an enemy and have to decide how to use the resources available to survive and escape the enemy or destroy them, The game has a fantastic soundtrack which is subtle and very suitable for a game where you are traversing the vastness of space. I would love to see a sequel for this game, or something similar in the future. So if you're thinking about buying this game and enjoy RPGs, dungeon crawlers or anything to do with space, for 10 bucks it would be hard to go wrong.
