Following news that Xbox One can be used as a dev kit, it looks like mod support could be incoming too.

Published on Jul 25, 2013

In a first for Xbox, it looks likely that Xbox One will support mods.

Following news that any Xbox One can be used as a dev kit, it was asked on Reddit if this means the console would support mods.

"It's up to developers to support that," answered Microsoft's Major Nelson. "These are two very different things."

His answer suggests that the capacity for modding is there, if developers create games in a way that will support it.

To work on a console a dev would have to provide pretty extensive modding tools. Not sure how this would work ....

That would be nice. PS3 allowed mods on Unreal Tournament 3, but it didn't really take off. It's not really a console thing, but having the option would be nice.

Mods are great is impossible to deny that, the PS3 supported mods but only 1 game came and allowed the feature UT 3 which even allowed PC mods to even run on PS3.

I wish sony and MS would support this, but i see it as all talk no substance from both sides, the PS3 already did it,but the whole DLC for money crap kill it,mods will compete directly with DLC which some game houses like EA and many others will not like.

It's something console developers and manufacturers need to embrace considering how brilliant the mod community is at breathing life into games for years beyond what their vanilla versions would last.

Though, i can't see it happening as it'll rub the publishers and their "more premium dlc" attitudes up the wrong way.

Oh it was great because PC mods were compatible, but you can see its fate with the whole push of DLC from developers.

UT3 got tons of free stuff for PS3 even from Epic then self,on xbox 360 they even charged for content already inside the disc.

Not gonna happen, outside of a very limited number of games via an extremely limited toolset. Just like the Halo forge, just like little big planet.

Actual mods always have the ability to increase instability into a game. You take the good and you take the bad with mods, thankfully the good usually outwieghs the bad.

You're crazy if you think a console developer is going to allow some random people to create mods that could potentially break the game in some way, or introduce instability. Not going to happen.

what do i say about it?

that consolites have tried to downplay mods since early 2000's based on their ignorance and the fact that they cant have them, if new consoles do support mods they will be the best thing since sliced bread for consolites now and will hype them like no tomorrow.

UT 3 on PS3 allowed PC mods to be played.

Several mods done here, most apparent one master shief, and 3rd person UT is FP.

UT 3 on PS3 supported mods and those created on PC by the way.

And mods had always been great only a true console fanboy who hasn't try them would say such a thing,i just to had a blast on C&C with the endless mods..

I don't think it works as easily as all that. Mod support enables users to either open up game files and alter them or everygame would need an engine editor which also doesn't really work on a console.

It would be a huge kick in the teeth for PS4 if the X1 had mod support but I don't buy it

I can see this being an extension of the Forge mod in Halo. Basiclly the devs give you access to a powerful yet simple editor so you can create new assets or tweak existing ones. However, I do not see how MS would be allowing this as they make so much bank from DLC.

This. I imagine if this comes to fruition, it'll be harnessed in a very controlled manner. Still a pretty cool step forward however. Whenever people are given toolsets to mess with on consoles, they come up with some pretty impressive things. see: LBP, Trials, Minecraft.

Can't see what you posted but I presume they're just new characters, which are exactly that, SKINS. They don't rock the boat like actual game-changing mods do.

That´s never gonna happen,it didn´t work when the dlc policies were almost non existant with the PS3 and now is completely out of the question, not to mention that modding isn´t as easy as some think, the maximum you´d get on a consle would be character reskins or other minor things, nothing major as lots of things you see on the PC.
