Going from this list, Solid Snake is the obvious answer.

@sailor232: "I'd argue that the world isn't a numbers game, teach your kid the rights and wrongs, respect, politeness, humiliation and you will have good kids that are more than likely to contribute"

I'd argue kids the last 30-40+ years are pretty much raised more on their outside surroundings than from their parents.

Someone rarely changes from what have learned from a child, deep down those morals of what is right and wrong always stick with them, something huge, something like religion or a near death experience can change a person later on in life. It can happen but the majority of the time people that are brought up wrong, continue to do wrong most if not all their life. It's like a dog, bring it up right and it will be good for ever, bring it up wrong and your stuffed, your stuck with a disobedient family member.

Still doesnt excuse the fact that Mario never had kids so he doesn't have to worry about any of this, thus, greatest male video game character of all time. Mario can walk away from this discussion as none of it worries him.

@sailor232:

If Mario was such a great Man, then how does he keep letting her get kidnapped in the 1st place? What kind of role model is that?

Oh yeah no ones perfect, Gordan Freeman caused the apocalypse and hes rated up with the greatest of all time. Link's another good choice, the protagonist for Undertale is another, two characters with nothing but the best thoughts for everyone (Undertale Pacifist that is).

Well perseverance is a great trait for a role model to demonstrate.

Link... He doesn't talk much. Modern male protagonists love to hear themselves talk. He isn't dramatic or angry or bulky. There is a simplicity to his character. That is not a bad thing. It means there is a little Link in all of us. He is a boy who finds his courage to explore the world outside and to do great courageous things. And it is funny when he gets attacked by cuccos.

Max Payne is the only correct answer to this.

Actually The Nameless One isn't a bad answer either

Fair enough, though overtime it seems Kojima put in a fair amount of nuance into Big Boss' character that makes him stand on his own. He's a very defined character ideologically, even if he's not much fun to be around compared to his junior. I've always found his portrayal in MG1 and 2 to sour things plenty as it takes away from the character's complexity. Those games were products of their time. As the medium progressed, storylines have grown to become a bit more sophisticated, making his turn into this supervillian feel less believable with every iteration.

With TPP, it's hard to call him a prick, because admittedly we don't really see or hear a lot of him. Instead we get Stoic Snake; devoid of personality with Big Boss' leadership qualities intact.

Big Boss showed some nuance even in MG2 (not so much in MG1 though). In MG2, he showed a humane side to him (like taking care of war orphans), and then a not-so-humane side (like raising war orphans to be future soldiers). And he gave some reasonable justifications for why he became disillusioned with government and society, and wanted to create a nation for soldiers. It wasn't very deep, but Big Boss showed just enough character in MG2 to set things up nicely for a much deeper origin story (i.e. MGS3).

Was going to vote for Gordon Freeman but he's really just me, you and everyone else who has played Half Life. As a game character he has absolutely no personality at all. Just a gun strapped to a nose.

So I went with Duke, he's got charisma, attitude, chews bubble gum and kicks ass :)
