What is it about Solid Snack that makes him a better character than Big Boss? Not that I prefer one over the other. I'm just genuinely curious as to the reasons.

Honestly, they are pretty similar, but Solid is just the more well know of the two. When you think of Snake, you usually think Solid. I perfer Big Boss myself, but that just me

Samus Aran is a she, the protagonist of Metroid.

I need to place a Mass Effect game the way these Commander Sheperd votes are adding up.

Picked solid snake. Mario was close but he lost points since he is such a lousy tennis referee. He calls out of bounds when I can clearly see the ball hit the line....

Gordon Freeman takes it for me.

I remember the first time I downloaded the Half-life demo in 1998.. took like 16 hours on a 28.8k connection, then my Pentium 1 233 Mhz and 16 MB ram struggled to run the game at high framerate.

good times.

Indeed, definitely. I should play a lot of games, don't know where to start. Both modern and old-school.

Start playing Thief: Gold, then Thief 2: The Metal Age and then Deadly Shadows. Thief: Gold (The Dark Project's Enhanced Edition), was written by Ken Levine, and from what I understand you like his work.

The game not only has excellent gameplay but also a great story and best narration in the trilogy. A great start for a solid trilogy.

EDIT:

Before playing Thief: Gold, go here and download TFix 1.22. It will allow you to play the game in 1080p, 32 bit colors, high frame rates etc.

http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=134733

Thief 2's GOG version comes with patch. Just apply it after installing the game for same features.

Solid Snake actually has a personality, some genuine charisma, some actual dialogue, his own fucking opinions.

Big Boss has been a vanilla mustache twirling evil guy in Metal Gear 1 and 2, or basically Solid Snake, minus his rough edges, but mildly naive in MGS3, or a complete prick (Peace Walker/V), and 4 does as much damage to the Big Boss mythos as anything. Solid Snake laughs it up a bit more, he's actually into broads, him hitting on Mei Ling and speaking about how he feels about war and the battlefield actually adds to him as a character. Yeah the dialogue is clunky and awkward, but he's a more well rounded character. Big Boss has never been that, the few times you can say he was meant to be admirable he was Solid Snake more or less as a response to MGS2. Which again Kojima used nicely for a plot swerve (James Bond being the one that gets played by the women, as opposed to the other way around), but he's not a character the way snake is. Who has developed more cleanly in MGS's storyline.

Fair enough, though overtime it seems Kojima put in a fair amount of nuance into Big Boss' character that makes him stand on his own. He's a very defined character ideologically, even if he's not much fun to be around compared to his junior. I've always found his portrayal in MG1 and 2 to sour things plenty as it takes away from the character's complexity. Those games were products of their time. As the medium progressed, storylines have grown to become a bit more sophisticated, making his turn into this supervillian feel less believable with every iteration.

With TPP, it's hard to call him a prick, because admittedly we don't really see or hear a lot of him. Instead we get Stoic Snake; devoid of personality with Big Boss' leadership qualities intact.

He lose major points for sticking with the same chick for 30 years. No kids yet? Move on Mario.

Duke Nukem both as a game and a character is an amalgamation of all great action movies rolled into a single celebratory title, specifically designed for young men. . Unfortunately, in this day of the woman and men who wear moisturizer, his time has past. As pure macho cool dude goes, it doesn't get much better.

I assume this is asking about dudes that have fleshed out personalities, or that the developers at least want us to take seriously, because my favorite heroes to play as are Sonic, X, Kyle Katarn, Link, Chief, etc.

I like Ryo Hazuki, because he's a man obsessed with getting revenge, but he has to walk a fine line, because he's also dangerously close to becoming the next Lan Di if he lets his hatred consume him.

@PSP107: If anything this makes Mario even better, the man knows the world doesn't need more humans and can respectively use contraception. Mario not shagging everything that moves give him more points, we don't need more Nathan Drakes.

Overtime he added nuance (3) and then made him shitty (4, PW, V). Solid Snake has always survived Kojima and David Hayter. He hasn't developed all that much outside of getting old, but he got a lot of things right with Solid Snake (sans the script) from the get go.

I like very intelligent characters, but I can't name any...
That said, I wonder which of these male characters you feel accurately represents you as a man? :P

I'll go with Professor Layton. He stays calm and classy and I like that about him.

@sailor232: "If anything this makes Mario even better, the man knows the world doesn't need more humans and can respectively use contraception. Mario not shagging everything that moves give him more points, we don't need more Nathan Drakes."

Good one. But the world is a number games. If Mario had 5 kids, At least 3 should turn out OK and contribute to mankind moving forward. One kid would mean lower odds.

@PSP107: It's a gamble, he could have one kid that adds more to the world than you or I, or he could have multitude that don't provide anything to society. I'd argue that the world isn't a numbers game, teach your kid the rights and wrongs, respect, politeness, humiliation and you will have good kids that are more than likely to contribute (even if its a McDonalds job it is still giving to the world) than having 5 kids that you didn't raise properly and sit home leeching from the government.

Mario is choosing the safe option and not taking a risk, having a child, the process of making a child even is a risk, the biggest gamble anyone could make in this world. Even if you have everything right, everything covered, money is no problem, couple are healthy, there's still a risk of something going wrong throughout the whole 9 months, or the baby is born with a defect because hey, that's the risk you are willing to take.

Shepard is the only acceptable answer.
