With the One X i don't think Sony need to worry one bit. I think the end of 2020 or into 2021 4K will be more achievable and a good time to upgrade.
2020 or later. If it is meant to happen I think Sony needs to get their spark back. I think its fading and thats no good to anyone
Based on console and Playstation history, I would say 2020 at the earliest, but 2021-2022 is what I'd bet on due to the phenom PS4 sales that Sony is in no rush to reset for a new gen and the mid gen machines introduced by PS and Xbox which should extend the lifecycle beyond the PS norm of 6-7 years.
They'll probably just phase hardware out in favor of streaming services like PS Now.
What's the point of making underpowered hardware that you barely make a profit on? It's not like PS users really care about performance - they just want exclusives.
The new Playstation 5 (dot com)
Depends on when PS4 sales decline, if the system keeps selling, and games keep selling on it, there's no financial reason for Sony to make a next gen jump.
If only that was a viable option. The quality is not there and neither is the selection of games.
I agree, streaming it the worst if you want to have actual controlability and fun in your game.
So that just leaves Sony publishing the exclusives on PC themselves.
Think it will come when Sony are confident they can do 4k 30fps for an affordable price. Have to say that graphics these days are insane allready, so I can wait personally. But I think the 2019 number some have posted sounds about right.
We don't even know IF there will be a Ps5 or if they just use the Ps4 as basis for all fiture hardware iteration. Just releasing newer models with better hardware. After all they are trying to be more and more like Pc, so why not take the awesome part of it that you can have a wide variety of power levels of the same system?
I can see Sony showing new model (Ps5 or the next Ps4 model) at the next E3 if the xOne X does great, just to let us know they'll top it. I doubt that the xOne X will do good though.
My best guess for the next version would be 2019. I hope it comes with actual good hardware though. I'm sick of disappointing consoles.
2020 or later. Sony is still having great momentum with the PS4/Pro and some of their heavy hitters are coming out in 2018. This gives their studios a chance to pump out either one last PS4/Pro game or start moving towards PS5. This also allows some time to release a 4K capable machine at a reasonable price point, without incurring a loss per system sold.

Next year... AMD has 12 nm FinFET update for Ryzen and Vega from 14 nm FinFET.
7 nm FinFET.... sometime in year 2019.
I expect the next XBox One to include 24 GB of RAM since the current X1X dev kits already includes 24 GB of RAM which doubles the retail X1X's 12 GB.
MS didn't use GDDR5-7000 384 bit config for X1X which could yield 336 GBps. X1X's 326 GBps uses 384 bit GDDR5-6800 config.
For 7 nm NAVI 11 (Vega 32/36 or RX-580 replacement) with Vega 56 level power memory configuration potential
GDDR5-9000 384 bit config yields 432 GBps.
GDDR5X-10000 384 bit config yields 480 GBps.
4K blu-ray storage may break compatibility between PS5 and PS4 while XBO S and X1X already has 4K blu-ray storage support.
@ArchoNils2: it’s not a guarantee, but Sony has gone on record stating that they still believe in console generations and that PS4 Pro is a mid-generation release.
If taken literally, that would put the PS5’s debut at November 2019. My hope is that they keep BC and x86 architecture while providing as big a CPU/RAM upgrade as they can push.
I don't because the Xbox One X will crush all opposition and Sony will just give up.
Xbox can't even beat an outdated tablet.
Surface Pro 4 tablet with i7U can't match XBO in Forza M7.
First tablet chipset to rival XBO is AMD's Raven Ridge APU 15 watts i.e. Vega IP with 10 NCU x 1300Mhz yields 1.66 TFLOPS.
