Romantic plots don't have to be thrust right into the centre of a video game story, and in some cases, never should have been - Look at Final Fantasy VIII especially - that games love story (despite being ridiculous) is tacky as hell.

Surprised no-one mentioned Celes & Locke. Celes still remains to this day (in my opinion) the most human character in the FF franchise.

And why these pair have gone without a mention yet is absolutely beyond me...

Hiding feelings is not a display of manliness or toughness its just straight up being afraid of those feelings. And if someone is afraid of their own feelings then I fear for their life and advice them to seek help or at least work on being true to their feelings.

Anyway, I'm surprised no one mentioned RPGs here. The first relationship that came to my mind is Revan/Bastilla in KoTOR. It was very well done and beautiful.
