From the last place, the Series X is going one rank lower. This is game over for Microsoft. No wonder they want to exit gaming by 2027.

To be fair, there are a lot of talented creators and engineers in Russia. If properly funded, I could see it being a great place for creative and innovative games and stories.
That said, I think they are limited by the rules and regulations of the government and so a lot of talent will leave and join studios and engineering teams around the world.
I cant see a console being successful without carving out a government exception with regards to what they can create and how much freedom they have.
Can't imagine being such a fanboy that you'd rather see Putin succeed than Microsoft.
Its just the truth.
Video games are now basically a form of soft power, so it would be smart to invest in the video game industry. We can see this with how the Chinese and Saudis are buying up video game developers, or how various Asian and European countries are investing in local game developers.
But trying to compete with their own console is far too risky. Most consoles in video game history have been failures. And even Microsoft had to eat a billion dollar loss just to establish itself as a competitive console manufacturer. Russia would be better off investing in local game developers to try recapture the success of Tetris, or buy up video game developers outside Russia.

What is a USSR console gonna bring us?
besides radiation?
USSR Helldivers. You're diving in the US, tho, and the propaganda ain't actual satire.
There's one good thing that i just thought of. If this does go through, you can be 1000% certain that none of their games will have any woke bullshit that's in the West.
While it would be awesome to see Russian talent enter the gaming ecosystem. This could backfire if putin doesnt try to help it grow organically.
From an economic perspective this makes sense too. As renewables grow in market share and viability, moving away from a reliance on fossil fuel makes sense.
There is some talent in the russian gaming scene too. Quite a bit of it in fact. Some of my favorite mods have been made in Russia.
That said, starting out by making a console is not very wise. I would recommend just starting with investing in PC game development and organically grow from there. Take the most prominent game studios and expand from there however they wish.
Let me guess what kind of games will be made:
Military shooters full on patriotic russian propaganda: check
Western countries as the enemy: check
Boasted Russia imperialist history: check
Meanwhile the russian youth will be playing these games and wanting to enlist in the army only to be more cannon fodder for his imperialistic goals
Putin knows whats he's doing
Wonder if they'll just like those console we see from China loaded with thousands of pirated games sold through Amazon third parties.
With the amount of garbage you goobers buy (Funko, anime body pillows, PlayStation Portal), I bet the Putindo would sell like luke borscht!
@mesome713: I'll be honest, i see you being the 2nd one to purchase his console on SW, only after nintendoboy16
@hardwenzen: Think you should go for one….you’d get more use out of it than your ps5 anyway.
You say that knowing damn well how much i adore my playstation 5.
@vatususreturns: I think that would be too blatant, and too on the nose, gotta be a bit more subtle.
Anyways, Russia has developed games from a wide variety of settings, themes and genres.
I want devs from all over the world to make games :3 Bring me all the culture, whether it is from the middle east, multiple african countries, india, china, japan, korea, the us, europe, south america and more. So many ideas I would love to be exposed to and culture to be immersed in.
If Putin is wise, he would invest in games not as war propaganda, but as a vessel to spread russian ideas and culture across the globe.
I'll try just about anything gaming related... if the games are good the games are good and I don't personally care where it's from. You can't hold civilians accountable for the mistakes of their government and that goes for any country around the world.

The CCP have already infiltrated the West with TikTok... The next step: live-action dating sims!
According to Steam users this is better than anything David Cage has made.

His games can't compete with those graphics!
@hardwenzen: Xbox makes more money than Nintendo. So...
Who cares when this is about gaming? MS has been losing at least 1B a year every year since GP was introduced. In fact, they've lost so much money on Starfield that you can be 100% certain that ES6 will be on the PS5 on day one.
@hardwenzen: Investors?
All that matters is revenue. Xbox is in the Black.
Oops. https://www.tweaktown.com/news/91847/game-pass-and-xbox-are-profitable-phil-spencer-reiterates/index.html
Them making money with windows, ai, etc doesn't improve their disappointing titles. They just launched cod warzone mobile and its a disaster.
@hardwenzen: All that matters is REVENUE.
What do you get from said revenue? They ain't buying you a new bike, you know that, right?

...
Honestly kind of surprised a Russian company didn't do this sooner given their strong video game history and culture. But then again your average Russian is kind of broke and has little time or money for video games.
Also, Russian games are kind of...crap. Seriously, the best they can do is Atomic Heart and that was very underwhelming. While the last big stinker they made was The Day Before, which was shut down within a week of launching.
Wow I can only imagine how boring their games would be, just chock full of propaganda.
Soviet Russia gave us Tetris, among the greatest games of all time. And it's not like American games aren't full of propaganda either.
Soviet Russia didn't give us Tetris, a guy named Alexey Pajitnov did. let's not do the Russian propaganda machine's work for them, OK?

Low bar, dude. Low bar.

Russian games tend to be very polarized in terms of quality. I have never seen them be super polished and they are usually a bit rough around the edges.
But King's Bounty and Pathologic 2 are great games! And Hardcore SK is arguably the best modpack for Rimworld. Escape from Tarkov is really popular too. Though I havent played that one.

Sigh...
Xbox is profitable. It is making Microsoft money. That is all that matters for a company: is a product/division making money (or is an investment on a path of profitability).
If Playstation was the number 1 selling console, but SCE lost revenue for Sony every year, they'd shut it down. Companies don't keep sections alive because someone at the top "thinks it's cool".
XBox makes more money that Nintendo. It's not in 3rd, it's in 2nd place.

Alexey Pajitnov was born and raised in Soviet Russia, and he developed Tetris on a Soviet computer (Electronika 60) at the Soviet Academy of Sciences. Denying Soviet Russia gave us Tetris would be like denying Japan gave us Mario, America gave us Call of Duty, Britain gave us GTA or China gave us Genshin Impact. You can't separate these games from their countries of origin.
As for Russian propaganda, let's not pretend the American propaganda machine is any better. Americans calling out Russian propaganda is like a pot calling the kettle black.
