The Last of Us Part 1 getting torn to shreds on Steam

33% positive reviews is one of the lowest scores I've seen for a AAA game in a long time. Sony will need to up their game. They either release ports no one asked for (Sackboy) or broken games on launch (HZD, TLOU). They did release a few good ports such as Spider-Man and GOW but their batting average isn't too good now.

According to Steam reviews, the shader compilation is exceedingly long (over 20 minutes on a 13900K up to 1h+ on lower-end CPUs/GPUs). The game frequently crashes, the camera with a mouse has jitters, the performance is horrible, and there might be a memory leak causing high VRAM/RAM consumption, stutters, and bad performance. The CPU usage can get very high (90% load on all threads in mid-tier 10th gen Intel CPUs) and some people also reported their entire rig crashing due to the extreme stress compilation shaders put on the CPU and GPU.

Sony screwed up. As usual. Still not gonna play the 30-40fps version on PS5, rather wait for them to fix this.

Damn, petty and entitled and you played yourself in the same, single sentence. Impressive.

Of course, if they released a better product, they'd sell a few million more copies, make a lot more money, then maybe use that money to make more games for Playstation but hey who is thinking big picture, am I right? More important to own anyone that isn't on your platform.

Not sure why this needed a thread when we have the other one on the PC port but whatever. I'll just copy/paste what I've said in the previous thread.

So from what I'm seeing, you'll have to wait at least 20 minutes for the shaders to reach 100% in order to play it. Once I get home tonight, I'll report back and see how it runs. Uncharted 4 PC has the same problem with the shaders taking its time to sort it out.

That's both surprising and disappointing that Jim doesn't understand the importance of solid PC ports for their strategy. He must be distracted by something that's making him lose focus. Maybe he should try to pass a law that forces all other pc ports to be worse than Sony's. Seem fair and the optimal way to solve the issue.

PC port got rushed so it could ride the wave of hype from the hbo series.

Rule of thumb as a PC gamer for the past 10 years now:

Always wait a month or two before playing a newly released game, especially when it's a console port.

Good thing I bought it for cheap as I'm not to worried about the issues as I need to let the shaders do its job.

That's why I'm glad we have Steam reviews, will always call bs when they see it.

What is up with that shader compilation nonsense anyway? How come other studios manage to build great game engines that never have this issue? I remember Ryse Son of Rome going from desktop into gameplay in a few seconds and it never stuttered, and that's a game that still looks great and was running on potato hardware.

Bad idea anyway since it has to compete with RE4 Remake as well which is doing much better than it.

Not anymore, now it’s negative. Yeah, torn to shreds alright. Good. The recommended specs for Ultra is RIDICULOUS for such an old game (4090), which rules out like 90% of the market, and is nothing but evidence of a lazy, half-assed port thrown together by a lazy, half-assed third tier developer. Deserves to get hammered, as this is nothing but laziness.

I was going to buy this, but no way now. Gracias, Steam reviews. 🙏🏼 Will check back in six months, as that’s what it sounds like it will take to fix this train wreck.

This. The game Rockacity City which has that Hollywood cast isn't doing so hot either, but since it's exclusively on Epic, customers can't make a fair judgement based on honest consumer reviews, as Epic lacks such a system.

Same thing with Settlers really: only a couple of days after it had gone up for sale, was I able to get a fair assessment of the game through professional and amateur reviewers on Metacritic.

This is the result of using a low level API like DX12/Vulkan. It requires more work from developers. They either neglect it completely and you get shader stutter or they have to design a shader management system. The easiest being to compile all shaders at the beginning of the game, but this also has the longest wait time before you can start playing.

Mehh was thinking about picking this up for the pc ( already played it on ps4) to expirence the story again after I had finished with the show, but now I definitely won’t bother!

It's fine, it's just an interactive movie. Play some real games instead.

The only issue I'm forseeing is this actually crossing the Steam 2-hour limit for refunds, which locks you out of a refund even if the game is broken afterwards.

very bizarre releasing games in this state. not just after all the hoopla over the change in direction to go multiplat, but also after the huge success of the hbo show when interest in the game would be at its peak.

Cows were really pissed when they learned that PC gamers were getting superior versions of their games, so Jim made sure the PC gamers would get a worse version this time.

Controversial opinion - PC just isn’t that important of a market for this type of game. Most PC gamers are kids that like to play Minecraft and Roblox and their PCs are potatoes that can’t handle much else.

There are a lot of people review bombing this game right now. The things they are saying are true but also a bit over the top.

But, the game is really unplayable right now if you have a really average PC like me (Ryzen 5 3600 / 16GB RAM / GTX 1060 (6GB)). I'm on the lowest settings and still getting horrible frame drops and performance.

And then the interesting part:

The other thing is, the game on low settings looks worse than the remastered version on PS4. Loads of blurry textures and is just a really horrible thing to look at, the remaster of the remaster was NOT needed.
