The disc can hold up to 1.6 TB, and does it by adding 4-5 layers with different color wavelengths on the same spot. It's 5 years off and Samsung already signed a deal with the inventors, but I can easily see this as something to pop up on PS5 and Xbox 4. Hardrives today get to about 2 TB, but with a disc like this, there will honestly be no concern whatsoever about disc space! The only thing to look at is the cost: Blu-Ray hasn't been extremely successful but now we have portable Blu-Ray players and they're as cheap as $150, so they're starting to chip into the market share, but this is definitely the future since it will be a long time before people will run out of space for a movie or game. Can you say *8000x5000p resolution* (something in that range), if future TVs can even support that?

it wont work for gaming. Too much space. It would take years to develop one game that could fill up the disc. Plus the consoles would probably cost a grand or so.

Storing every single texture in the game in every single colour in the visible spectrum of light, and even some of the colours we can't see.

It'll be great.

great for super high def movies...not much good for games. considering it costs devs many millions to fill up 9GB of data....it would cos many many 100s of millions to fill a disc that big. good look trying to get a publisher to foot that bill. it might come in handy for games 15-20 years from now....but at the mo and even for the PS4 and co it would be complete overkill.

Yeah... HDD's today get 1-2TB's. Five years from now they'll probably be running 25-50TB's. If not 100TB.

Despite what Blu-ray advocates may think; storage is not the most important factor in games.

I don't understand the obsession with storage capacity, storage is one of those things which you either have enough of or you don't, vastly more storage doesn't change much.

Storage is just the enabler for more content, not the cause.

I predict about 2 generations into the future we may see games expand to this level of memory. Imagine a game TODAY with 1.6 TB of data an NO bugs . Can anyone say OVERKILL Game of the Millennium?

Blu-Ray still has lots of life left in it. So far the only real use of the space with games has been uncompressed sound which most (like 99%) people can't tell the difference from a 320kbps Mp3 anyway.

I'm an advocate for BluRay, and I certainly don't think storage is the most important part of games. Like you said yourself, storage is the enabler for more content.

I was amazed what the advent of cd-rom games meant for the industry. Both the size of games and the manner of their presentation were altered forever. When I got my PS2 I was very happy to have the size increase in the physical format. It didn't matter to me that many launch titles still shipped on cd-roms. I believed that as the generation matured we would see more and more need for the increased space DVD afforded, and there were a good number of last gen titles that were literally crammed onto DVD towards the end.

For this generation, I like the idea that as games continue to increase in size, a new physical media affords them room to grow. There are other options of course. Disc swapping can work for some games. Installs to a HDD can work for literally any title, if allowed. But games will always get bigger over time. They just do.

DISCs are NOT the future of gaming.

Blu-ray will come and go.

Downloadable and Streaming media is the future, for games, movies and of course music.

1 TB flash media will be here faster than you think and it will be on your ipod, ps4, PC, Mac, etc...

Remember there's only so much that the human eye can resolve. Beyond a certain resolution it's pointless since it's greater than you're eye can resolve.

Sorry but they already announced 1TB bluray disks that work on all bluray players a year ago. Bottom line? Bluray haters, (aka X-Box 360 lovers) are in for many years of fail.

wow ... :| screw harddrives!! This is my new back up system :D. Seriously two of these disk would give me 3.2 TB without much space!!! but yeah it's worthless for gaming. Unless it replaces the HDD's themselves (like my plan:P). But for actual games i think blu ray is more than enough.

Higher resolution cut scenes (i'm talking 3 fold larger than 1080p), ultra hires textures, and 3d technology for 3d displays, (will require more textures to look awesome)... and they will still have 1 tb left over after that.

before it will be any use you will have to convince console makers to have a 400% ram increase over what they put in consoles. x360 and ps3 should have had 2-4gb ram. but no they put in ram from 2003-4. even with with vista a 2gb system and a 512mb gpu still has far more usable ram than consoles have total ram. around 416mb usable on ps3 and 1500mb on a 2gb/512mb vram pc system.

It's about time TI finished their hologram storage space, though I don't see many uses for this in gaming, until we get TV's and hardware to make a game look exactly like the real world, this will be helpful for those that, for some reason, want to download everything they see on the Internet...

Normal consumers will never need more than 1080p on their < 65" TVs. Consequently, I don't see a general need for more than Blu-Ray among those who like to collect physical discs.

The future of storage. Not really the future of gaming...
