Square Enix: "We won't remake FF7 until we make a modern FF that exceeds it

"Square Enix has revealed why they are yet to remake Final Fantasy VII despite the rabid desire of many fans.

According to Andrisang, CEO Yoichi Wada explained during the company's annual shareholder meeting that it would not remake the legendary RPG until it makes a brand new Final Fantasy game that "exceeds the quality" of Final Fantasy VII.

If the team were to remakeFinal Fantasy VIInow, then the Final Fantasy franchise "would be done with".

In a candid statement, Wada clarified that he feels the current slew of titles in the franchise have not surpassed their popular predecessor in terms of quality. He stressed that while they hopefully would manage this in future, if the team were to remake Final Fantasy VII before this was achieved, then the Final Fantasy franchise "would be done with".

This revelation comes hot on the heels ofstatements byTetsuya Nomura, who recently admitted that a remake wasn't a priority. He also suggested that the current batch of titles would need to be improved before the company cast its gaze backwards, saying "The new Final Fantasy must overcome the Final Fantasy of the past.?

It looks like for now we're just going to have to hope that rumours about anupdated Steam versionof the game being released are true, and that Final Fantasy XV is the game we've all been waiting for fromSquare Enix. At least they admit nothing they have done thus far has exceeded FFVII. FFXIII certainly didn't do it, FFXIII-2 didn't do it.. onto the next FF please.. Prefrably not FFXIII-3.

I loved VII but it wasn't the best FF. It's certainly better than the abortions they've been making lately though.

A HD version of IX would be nice.

popularity and sales wise most likely . Though I feel no other FF is going to hit that point again so im happy cause that means they can keep making other FF and not do freaking remakes. Personally I still like FF7 the most out of the ones iv played but thats not to say the others suck or anything.

Why remake X? i played it in 1080p a while ago and it still looks better than most games today, the art style is god tier

In some ways, it is and it's arguably the best all-round FF package.

Serously, I think many people (and me) would prefer an updated FFIX version.

By modern, I'm assuming he means this console generation. FFXIII had all the set pieces for a great game and story, but failed to execute in some meaningful ways. FFs live and die by the story, characters, and world.

They don't have Sakaguchi writing the stories anymore. It'll never happen. Ever.

I find it funny that when it comes to movies remakes are frowned upon but in games that's all people seem to care about -_- FF7 Does not need a remake!

Wasn't it already confirmed they can't do a FF7 remake for the PS3 since it would take more than one disc and sony has a hard on for not having games on more than one disc (hence the unzipping/dling games before you play them).

Seems like SE is just throwing out excuses on why they don't want to remake FF7 or even a sequel, but hey they found the time to make crappy sequels for 10 and 13...

You're going to need to elaborate a little more. Compare aspects directly, so there's something tangible to discuss.

Personally, I feel that you may have glossy memories of the prior FFs, because my first one was FF7 and all the previous ones feel dated, to the degree of being unplayable.

FF6 is still good, but I find it it too silly, unfocused in terms of plot, poorly translated/written and somewhat archaic in gameplay design.

FF7 is a child of it's time too, mind you; I just find that there is less silliness and what's there is less childish. Also, the narrative is more tight and the plot is both more coherent and engaging.

As for game mechanics, both are extremely dated but, to me at least, FF6 is a lot more unpolished/more primitive; and Sabin's Street Fighter Combos are a PITA.

Edit: FF7 would play well with a gfx boost and some tightening of a couple of mechanics; it would'nt takke too much restructing to make it as accesable as fx Persona 3. Any prior FF would need A LOT more work, IMO.

The only FF game that could use a remake is XIII. FFVII is fine the way it is.

Why, FFX is a PS2 game, it looks fine. FFVII Is HIDEOUS, so much so that it's vanilla state is 'unplayable'.

I'd rather see a remake of something that would be impressive compared to its original, not just a bit of an upgrade.
