This was one of those games where the reviews convinced me not to get it when it came out. I also thought 12 was boring. 10 was ok, but my favorite fantasy has been 8 (just a slight edge over 7). Is it worth a play through?

No
Next question
Dont bother unless you're a huge FF fan...
The game is not terrible but it did disappoint me.. probably cause I had much higher expectations !!
It has a demo?=O I know FF13-2 does.[QUOTE="TecmoGirl"]
Play the demo -- then come back and delete this thread after your epiphany.

lol! Yah, I think its the first one. I played it early last year thinking it would be exactly like that first E3 trailer. So disappointing.

I bought that s*** day one so I got it the worst.:PI thought it was good. Nothing like FF8 story wise though which is my favorite in the series. I had a rough time getting into the story, but I really liked Hope's journey towards revenge and thought he was one of the best and well written characters in the game.
The gameplay was good, but was kind of bummed about how the player used the Eidolons or Guardian Forces as you might remember them. I just couldn't wrap my mind around how to properly use them effectively or if I was or wasn't to be honest. Most of the time I didn't even use them except for a few occasions; such as, boss fights or when you have no other choice.
The game is beautiful. The enemies have great detail and can be challenging at times. The game is also very linear. After you beat it your more then likely never to go back and play it since you've explored just about everything there is to see. There are side missions for you to do, but most of it was just tracking down some sort of beast and returning.
The game took me 55 hours to beat. That was exploring just about every part of the game and going back to locked doors or what not.
The ones worth playing are FF6,FF7,FF9 <-- which are all best played on handheld's psp, vita etc if you have the option as the pixelated gfx look a lot sharper on the smaller screen. Â And soon bravely default, which is the closest thing there has been to a final fantasy experience in wayyyy too long.
FF13 is basically a more casual, more straight-forward, more contrived FF10. If you didn't like FF10 then the chances of liking FF13 ar slim to none. On top of it stuff like armor, weapons, accessories are useless in this game. The leveling up if capped for each stage and designed to be at your very best at each boss encounter. There's a cut-scenes literally at ever corner. The maps are a hallway where you keep going forward and forward battling a few enemies, then a cut-scenes, then a boss fight and another cut-scene (which consists of mostly pep-talks because not even the main-characters know what they are doing).
FF13 focuses on story and battle system alone. And to be honest, the story was bad, the characters were bad and the battle system is very limited but very fast and fancy looking. Then for FF13-2 the game is a little bit more open with a stage selection ala MegaMan but everything else is even worse. They even added QTEs to the battle system in hopes of making it deeper but this is not like Zell's in FF8 where you chose his action within a time limit, FF13-2 QTEs are just that QTEs.
Â
But as always, this is just my opinion. I have played and loved every FF game from 6 all the way to 12 but FF13 is not just the worst FF game but one of the worst game I have ever played.
If you can play it up to the 20 hour mark when it'll finally play like an RPG then yeah.
mitu123
Can you please tell me what exactly is an "RPG?" Because I fail to see what side quests and a large scale world have to do with "role-playing." And can you specify what exactly makes the first 20 hours of any other Final Fantasy more like "role-playing?"
This all assuming that "role-playing" is the act of creating your own role/character within a story?

:o Definitely not going to play it then!
The game has two stories on top of each other with no connections and many plot hole, it barely makes the pre-oschool standards of storytelling. It has a limited battle system that get repetitive, a broken leveling system and a broken weapon upgrading system. It has level caps that only expand after boss battles, and has a broken party system. The thing is an abomination.
[QUOTE="SexyJazzCat"]In terms of what?Well, it's the best Final Fantasy game after all. No other comes close to it.

Your not missing much if you don't honestly I can;t remeber the last time I played a FF game I liked
Give the game a shot, if you like it you will get 40-100 hours of entertainment, if you dont like it then you lose 10 dollars.
Pros
-Best battle system of the series
-Some of the best visuals on PS3
-Very polished
-Excellent soundtrack
Cons
-Very linear
-Story is very melodramatic
-Steep learning curve.
I love the 13 games, i can understand why some people hate them though, its one of those "Love it or hate it games", you will have to try it out yourself to know if you will like it or not.

No, fck no. I have played every main FF game and a lot of spin offs, I even played mystic quest for the SNES. FF13 is the worst FF in the main series, the plot is paper thin, characters are completely horrible and have almost 0 development asides from a lot of cliche shit (the whiny baby turns into a self-assured man and the tough character ends up softening with her peers) . The combat system blows balls in a bad way, level design is absolutely terrible and it's just a narrow corridor, everything absolutely everything about FF13 sucks balls and it should not be considered a FF game. skip it if you liked the franchise and want to keep its legacy intact. This was one of those games where the reviews convinced me not to get it when it came out. fck no. My favorite FF is FF8 by far and I also thought 12 was boring and I think that 13 is the biggest shit out there. Seriously the plot is like something you'd find in a mario game. if landing a brick on top of another one would be considered the plot of tetris, it would be a better plot than that of FF13.Give the game a shot, if you like it you will get 40-100 hours of entertainment, if you dont like it then you lose 10 dollars.

This type of progression always breeds complacency and frequently appears in RPG's. This was right from the start it wouldn't be so bad if it was late in the game and you were maxed out level wise. Another thing the story was extremely boring I did not care about any of the characters. If the story was at least a little more interesting then i could forgive it for the shitty gameplay hope the next one is better. Square is not the same company that gave us some of best the RPG's out there like chrono triggerIf you can play it up to the 20 hour mark when it'll finally play like an RPG then yeah.

Good, stick to that decision, because everything that man just said is true. Seriously it's just best to pretend that FF13 never existed. The paradigm shift system was ridiculously flat, I finished that game with the same 5 paradigms, never had to change them. the combat system allows for 0 creativity unless you want to waste over 1 hour mashing the X button to beat a boss because if you don't follow the exact action order you're simply not going to beat the boss fast (but you're never going to die because its easy as shit) You see, no one really thinks that turn based combat is good, but it was invented so that you could have control of all the party members at the same time instead of having them being controlled with AI. They removed that in FF13, by only letting you play with 1 character...so why the hell was it still turn based? thats like having a guy from coca cola R and D telling you "we've managed to remove every unhealthy aspect about coke while literally keeping the exact same flavor! but we're just gonna give you a coke zero instead!". Also the "gambits" were completely stupid, the AI was braindead, the AI characters would NEVER change the order of their actions during the paradigms, for example a medic would NEVER revive an ally unless the other 2 party members had a green health bar, so sometimes if you didnt had a phoenix down with you and no paradigm where your main character was the medic, you'd be stuck for over an hour fighting because the dumb AI would never revive the fallen teammate because one of the party members had 49% health.I think it has a fantastic battle system. It was enough to get me going with it and I put over 100 hours into it just because I loved using the Paradigm shifts. If you let it get its hooks into FFXIII is an excellent game.

I just assumed someone whose standards allowed them to like the plot of 8 would be enough for 13. :P

WHOA! HOLD IT RIGHT THERE MISTER! I call total bullshit on that same 5 paradigms nonsense. Ridiculous.
The paradigm system is designed around controlling the greater flow of the battle. It isn't about individual actions. Your goal is to read the situation and decide what those characters should be doing. Battles should be brisk, we're talking 1 minute affairs, maybe less if you're good.  So don't give me a history lesson on turn-based combat here.
Final Fantasy XIII features combat scenarios outside of the main story that just get absolutely ridiculous and it's obvious you never followed the Cie'th Stone missions. Gruieling battles that require actual knowledge of the paradigm system. You aren't selecting individual actions, you're laying down a gameplan and watching it happen. I can understand if you don't like that, but don't go calling this game easy, it's obvious you've never faced the tougher challenges in the game.
You don't have to like Final Fantasy XIII, but I refuse to hear out an opinion on a battle system that you half-heartedly played through when I KNOW you need to constantly change Paradigm shifts and characters that you have available based on different missions as well as in the story, but moreso for those monster hunts. Tons of bosses all tougher than the actual final boss.
