@MrGeezer: Yeah, there's a huge disparity between a game being able to work on a console, and actually being released on a console. The market's for PC/Consoles have overlap, but they're also markedly difference... Hence why genres heavily popular on PC aren't always popular on console.

Total War bores the hell out of me but I can imagine games like Age of Empires 2 (just as an i.e.) really taking off on console if they got the controller setup right but let's be honest here, I'm not going into an RTS skirmish map with anything but a mouse and keyboard.

The original Halo Wars on console is a good example of how far you can take these games which just isn't very far. Better hardware in current consoles is neither here nor there the controllers are the problem and always will be.

Interesting that Halo Wars 2 is on PC too. Are they going to completely gimp the PC version so it plays on console? Of course they are.

RTS belongs on PC. End.

Total War is not possible on today's consoles, certainly not the modern iterations, regardless of the controls being used. If they didn't chop down unit sizes, map sizes and level of detail, such as being able to zoom into pretty much first person, hell even the campaign map would push them beyond their limits especially after 50 or so turns where a lot of the map is visible and it has to not only calculate all the factions moves but display them as well.

A modern game such as Shogun II, Rome II or Attila would melt the CPU in a PS4 or XB. I dread to think how many house fires Total War: Warhammer would be responsible for.

A more basic game (game type not tactical complexity) like Star Craft II or a Command and Conquer base building on a single map RTS, where there are a couple of enemy bases and a maximum of a few hundred units and buildings, wouldn't be beyond the realms of reason though.

I prefer games like hearts of iron, civilisation, knights of honor and total war over base building games; however, I still enjoy base building games a lot. I am still playing age of empires time to time. I also play a lot of company of heroes, which is a more of a action and tactical orientated base building game.

I also have a hard time understanding how you are bored by total war games, I know the campaigns are quite weak and not as extensive compared to civilisation or hearts of iron, but battles are amazing, both gameplay wise and visual

@thepclovingguy: Shogun 2 is undoubtedly the peak.

Napoleon was also excellent, it's unfortananly (and wrongly) tarred as a cash in.

I don't think the consoles' CPU can handle total war.

I just got myself a steam controller and so far I have to say it works great with total war games like attila and rome wether be it the campaign or battle map, I can easily move around, zoom in and give commands with no issues at all. This made me think why not expand this market to console as well, this way the rts genre could grow and become stronger than ever. They might have to design a costum controller specificly for rts games on the ps4 and xbox one, but buying another controller aint that expensive.

Also dont tell me console gamers wouldnt want these games, I have seen a lot of console gamers begging for total wars and rts games in general to come out on console.

I know that total wars are quite fps hungry, but with proper optimization like decreasing shadow detail and the lod distance on buildings and units, this shouldnt be a problem

Ps. I am a dedicated pcgamer, I personally take a pc over console every day. But I think we are all gamers and deserve to be treated equal.

Rome 2 would never run on console you must be stupid if you believed it could? The frame rate would suffer on console. Total war is a CPU bound game it would run worse on PS4

rome 2 ran perfectly on my old pc on medium settings, and my old pc had only an intel i3 3220 and gtx 650. With a few more cpu tweaks it could potentially also work on a console.

But I doubt attila would work on console, since it even pushes my gtx 980ti and intel i5 4690k on max settings to the limit

Hardware specs is not the problem (altho control is a real killer).

RTS games can be played on console, there have been console rts games since the early 90s on consoles with far less buttons than they have now.

Notable games include:

C&C series (PS1, Sega Saturn, N64), Dune II (sega mega drive/genesis) and Dune 2000 (PS1), Warcraft 2 (PS1, Sega Saturn) , warhammer, AOE II: age of kings (PS2), Kessen, Supcom series and halo wars on consoles going way back to sega mega drive/genesis

I enjoyed most of those especially Kessen, played all three. Right now I'm enjoying Grand ages medieval, also played Tropico 5 on PS4.

Total War requires a very good CPU to handle battles of thousands of units. So no, consoles can't handle it with their potatoes cellphone cpus. Next.

I don't think there is a market. If you like to play RTS you buy a pc. Its just what you do. So most of the people who are into RTS have pcs. It would take a new ip that revolutionizes the genre and make them more accessible on console to Mae them take off on the platform imo

I am a console player and have been my whole life, but I love rts games. I hope total war comes out on ps4 and you wouldn't need another controler u would just have to make the anolog stick the mouse and map out everything else the most comfortable way like a to click and if you hold it and drag you van select multiply targets that kind of thing idk but ill take anything i can get at this point

I always wanted an rts on the wii u in some form, but the genre is too niche for consoles and doesn't help that the wii u rarely gets games from western publishes

The wiimote would work perfectly with Total War, or any number of strategy games with a simple tweak of the UI.

They could just release a wireless mouse and keyboard for consoles. I think the problem is that most console gamers prefer throw away gaming experiences that you dont have to think about too much.

It wouldn't sell. The reason is pretty harsh, but these games are too complicated for the console gamers.

The Steam controller is pretty cool, I agree, but I'm not sure it would go over well with the console market. Some people on consoles might enjoy it and love it, but I don't think it would sell enough in the end. Also, they'd have to actually design the controller to work with the closed systems, and I think MS and Sony would charge them a great deal of money in licensing fees to actually do that.

Good idea in theory, but it's a risk in actual practice, which is probably why it hasn't happened yet.

@thepclovingguy: Have to say that the Steam controller is pretty darn good. It is tough to get used to at first but once one does it is so flexible that it is fun to tinker with control schemes.

With the release of halo wars 2 the demand of rts games on console might rise and since the same developer for total war game is working on halo wars 2, console users might even see future total war games on console. I also dont believe you have to dumb down rts games to make them work on console since I have no issues at all playing rts games with the steam controller, although the steam controller uses a touch pad for aiming.

I think HW2 will be received here the same as the first, 5-6/10 but have a better MC store and be fun for fans of Halo and accessible console RTS'. Will it raise popularity of the genre for the console gamer? I doubt it.

As a member of Total War forums. The mere mention of porting total war to console will cause great upset. They feel their games will be dumbed down for console players. I don't see it happening anyhow total war does even run that great on high end rigs at launch.

They could port the older games like Medieval 2 to console, they could work.

and this is where you run into problems. having to design a brand new controller for a specific genre and expect people to wanna run out and buy it and the game(s) with it is a terrible idea. You have to think about the masses when it comes to consoles..and those masses all use the standard controller.

Yep. If it were that easy, they could just use mouse/keyboard support and call it a day.

True. I would not care if was ported to console, but the fear is console players would find the game too complicated.

Since no one seems to care that this is a necro thread, I'll offer my two cents:

RTSs are certainly possible on consoles, but because consoles count uniformity as one of their selling points, I really don't think you can ask console gamers to buy a specialist controller just to play one genre of games. This was one of the reasons rhythm games like Guitar Hero died out, and racing games are not comparable because they are still very playable on standard controllers. Any controller innovation are therefore done and dusted for another generation. Therefore, any RTSs coming to consoles in the near future will have to work on a gamepad, which is indisputably clumsier and less versatile than KB&M.

Which brings me to my second point of concern; as much as I would love to see all platform exclusivity die in a fire, I am concerned that bringing games such as Total War or the more complex Paradox games to consoles will cause these games to lose the complexity that are the essence of these games. I do believe that with some effort and innovative game design, it is possible to make complex gameplay features work on a gamepad; even if they remain clumsy and slow, they will still work. However, in my experience, when developers are faced with the choice between coming up with solutions to maintain complexity and simplifying that complexity, they will choose the latter nine times out of ten. This is to the detriment of the development of the genre.

For these reasons, I think we won't see a properly complex RTS on a console any time soon, and I hope that is the case until Microsoft and Sony innovate their user input technologies.

RTS games have already been done on console and shown they can be made with decent control schematics.

360 had battle for middle earth, warhammer, red alert, supreme commander 1 and 2, halo wars, universe at war, RUSE, end war, halo wars just off the top of my head.

Thes console version of supreme commander was pretty much just as good as the PC version control wise.

Tropics 5 is on console now and Citis Skylines is coming to X1 too.

I play a lot of rts games (I mostly only play rts on PC) and I feel I have a decent gauge on how they play and it's really up to the devs to make a decent control schematic but it's definitely doable in a good format.

Too many hermits always parrot about how rts can't work on console when they already do.

They say the same thing about MMOs which is also wrong. I played Tera on PC with an Xbox controller and it works fine. Games like Neverwinter and TESO also work.
