OG RE4 was never “clunky”.
The game plays beautifully, even to this day. It’s a masterclass of game design in nearly every respect, and that’s not nostalgia. But glad you’re enjoying it, Ghost. Guess what? I doubt you’re even moving all that much while shooting. It’s not a game changer, it doesn’t turn the damn thing into Max Payne 3 as everyone was pretending it would, you are, mechanically-wise, playing the same damn game that was released 18 years ago.
Congratulations, and welcome to the RE4 fan club, better late than never I guess.
As far as the best RE, while the remake is great and excels past its forebear in certain respects, I still think the original to be the better game. Not from any singular aspect, but OG RE4 had the benefit of being conceptualized and executed within its own scope; built from the ground up, it wasn’t built and reimagined on a pre-existing inception. Hence it coheres and flows better. Everything works, and everything is considered in the interplay between mechanics, level design, enemy encounter…..it’s all simply flawless. In the remake, things like pacing (due to the inclusion of menial side quests) have been affected detrimentally, some of the voice acting misses the mark, the removal of laser sights for all weapons was just bizarre bozo-tier stupidity, Ashley incessantly panting like she’s recovering from an orgasm gets incredibly annoying, her escort commands are useless compared to the original, the balance is a bit off, among other things. Building on nigh perfection risks lessening it, and unfortunately, more than a few of Capcom‘s changes here are for the worse.
OG RE4 is, like SMG, one of only a handful of games from start to finish where I really struggle to find any real fault in its design. Sure there are small nitpicks I can gripe about (like not being able to switch weapons with the d-pad, which affects the flow of combat), but I’m still continually amazed at the level of competence and craftsmanship whenever I play it.
