The latest, and last, installment of the 20-year-old Metal Gear franchise is crafted exclusively for PS3 consoles and is heralded as just what Sony needs - a blockbuster title to drive demand for their hardware.

Metal Gear will "absolutely" boost PS3 sales in the way the Xbox 360 video game Halo 3 is doing for Xbox 360 consoles, predicts Konami assistant producer Ryan Payton.

Metal Gear has sold tens of millions of copies the franchise premiered in 1987.

"I think the slow start for PS3 has been blown out of proportion. Once they have killer titles, things will be different."

"Metal Gear will be a system seller. It will be excellent for the PS3 - a Halo 3 for the PS3."

Shirley you can't be serious ? I know you can find better sellers out there but to say that it doesn't sell well is laughable. If it was sarcasm , I apologise.

Sorry, but no. HELL NO.

Wake me when a PS3 game sells more in its lifetime than Halo 3 did in 2 weeks. Then I'll consider this.

(point being, PS3 gamers don't buy games. Expecting them to start with MGS4 is something very unlikely.)

It will sell well but not Halo well.

The game hardly appeals to a wide audiance, it is very much a gamers game.

MGS 3 sold a little less than 4 million copies.

Halo 2 sold 8 million copies and Halo 3 has sold roughly 5 million by now

Not a chance it'll sell as well. Not one chance. MGS doesn't appeal to the masses the same way Halo does, and it doesn't feature the same kind of online play Halo does, so no way will that happen.

And you're quoting a guy from Konami? How biased is that? Crazegamez, "don't lie to yourself you are torturing your soul.."

It's pretty clear you're obsessed with Halo 3 after all the topics you're posting about it, so why don't you just go out and justbuy the game?

and MGS3 sold 4 million. Um, 4 million in sales is pretty damn good, especially when you look at how many games came out for the PS2. Almost 350 alone that scored an 8.0 or better here...

Total sales do not tell the whole picture. do the MGS launches cause sales spikes, or do people simply pick up the games over time? a simple final sales figure will not give us the answer.

What we definitely know is that Halo sells systems. A TON of them. FACT.

But does MGS? Probably nowhere near at the same level. I've never heard of console sales spikes at or around the time of a MGS game launching.

how many? that's the question. unfortunately, you don't have the answer. Again, final sales figures don't show how us the critical answer to this question. The only real evidence would be how many consoles were sold above the average number at or around the months surrounding the launch of MGS2.

Since nobody here has that data, they can only speculate. Speculation != fact.

Halo 3 has 25% penetration into the 360 market. That is unprecedented. Even if MGS4 got that, its sales would be half of Halo 3's because the PS3 installed base is so much smaller.

Besides, MGS is not universally known like the Halo series. It doesn't have the appeal because its a slow game with too much crappy dialog that doesn't even make sense half the time.

Maybe because by the time MGS1, 2 and 3 came out most people already had playstations?

All three came out at least to years after the systems came out.

7 million sales on 100 million consoles is a 7% attach rate. Halo 3 has been out for a month, and there are only 12 million 360's to potentially buy it for, yet its already sold half as much as MGS2. Nevermind the fact that Halo 3 costs between $10 and $80 MORE.

no, "most people" did not already have playstations.

MGS2 came out approx. the same time in the PS2's lifecycle as Halo 3 as I recall. Maybe the Fall before. (I seem to remember MGS2 coming in Fall 2002?). MSG3 was definitely too late to be a system seller though, I agree.

Which means the only way to prove your point is by using MGS2, since it was relatively early in teh PS2 lifecycle. If you can find evidence of a meaningful spike in console sales at, immediately before or immediately after MGS2, then I'll agree.

If not, you can not say definitively that MGS2 was a system seller.

I loved MGS2, personally. I used it to show off my PS2 back then...but I don't believe that game led any of my friends to pick up PS2s...so it's hard for me to think of MGS2 as any kind of system seller on this side of the big pond.

People often say the same about the nextGen movie formats, and the argument is flawed for the same reason. Blu-Ray is outselling HD DVD movies in sheer volume, but relative to the number in the installed userbase, it's selling less.

Everything is relative...and all numbers must be considered to understand the full picture.

quite alot considering the games the ps3 currently have. In europe ps3 games sells better when they release than xbox360 games because ps3 owners badly want new games, which is understandable.

MGS has never been a system seller... take a look at historical sales data and I think you'll figure that out. the strong majority of MGS fans are die-hard sony fans, so they usually buy the system regardless of how craptastic it is... so they're really only making the game for the hardcore faithful fanboys.

i'm sure it might push a few systems, but nothing close to FF or Halo... not by a long long long shot.

MGS4 won't sell like Halo3 for the simple reason that it is not casual friendly. Anyone can pick up a controller and play a game like Halo since all you really need to know is how to point and fire. MGS4 controls and gameplay are too complex for the average casual player to just pick up and play, but I think MGS4 will sell very well to the more hardcore gamers.

Well really there's only 2... Halo 3 hasn't been out for even a month yet and it's done like 5 million probably will do 10 when it's all said and done.

MGS has three games that are pretty much done their cycles of being out there and I don't think those 3 equal the sales of Halo 1 2 and 3 even with Halo 3 being out for so little.

I think everyone agrees that MGS sells. The numbers show that.

What people don't agree on is whether or not MGS moves CONSOLES in volume. That's a big difference...and there's no evidence to support it moving consoles right now. Only feelings.

[QUOTE="dkhw"]Whoever said this MGS doesn't sell is a major fool. It has ALWAYS sold well. It just has never met the level of Halo or GTA.Dreams-Visions

I think everyone agrees that MGS sells. The numbers show that.

What people don't agree on is whether or not MGS moves CONSOLES in volume. That's a big difference...and there's no evidence to support it moving consoles right now. Only feelings.

there is actually evidence that it doesn't sell systems... a few months ago there was a thread specifically about MGS pushing systems and someone found some old NPD figures, or something similar that indicated it has never been a system seller. it's a game bought up by the Sony faithful, people that generally don't wait until MGS comes out to buy a PS3.

if i find that thread i'll post a link to it.

it might be an exception this time though, seeing soooo many people are holding off on buying a ps3 because the games just aren't there yet. time will tell.

The Metal Gear Soild series has never sold really well.

MrEpyx

 LMFAO

MGS2 sold 7 million copies. Only games that sold more last gen were Halo 2, the GTA series games, and the GT series games.

and MGS3 sold 4 million. Um, 4 million in sales is pretty damn good, especially when you look at how many games came out for the PS2. Almost 350 alone that scored an 8.0 or better here...

so, uh

Fission Mailed?

7 million sales on 100 million consoles is a 7% attach rate. Halo 3 has been out for a month, and there are only 12 million 360's to potentially buy it for, yet its already sold half as much as MGS2. Nevermind the fact that Halo 3 costs between $10 and $80 MORE.

um, when MGS2 came out, the PS2 had a much smaller userbase. A lot smaller. And because of the amount of games and the amount of QUALITY games on the PS2, gamers, for the most part, that bought a PS2 farther down the road (2, 3 years later) did not bother looking at past PS2 games when considering what to buy. Especially since MGS2 did not have multiplayer. Its not like the Halo series, which is still being played by people online years after its inital release. Casuals want the "hip" game, the kind of the thing they can play and/or discuss with their friends. Once the release window on single-player games like MGS2 closes, the sales take a hit, regardless of the quality of the game.

Also, MGS2 is not casual friendly. Casuals might pick up the game when it debuts on a system because they see the awesome graphics and the character kicking ass. But then after they play it, they realize the complex story, long cinematics, and previous lack of multiplayer is not something they like, because those things are not something casuals want. If they do like it, they became MGS fans. Nobody passively follows a series like MGS, you either love it or you don't care about it or hate it.

Your attach rate statistic means absolutely nothing. If you have a game on a system that has sold over 120 million, and it trails only a handful of other games on that platform (GTA - one of the most casual games ever and GT) in sales, you've done something significant.

Why was Halo's (and Halo 2's) attach rate on the Xbox so high? Because it was casual friendly, had multiplayer, and had almost no competition. The Xbox lacked all gametypes, and the PS2 and GC certainly weren't putting out quality FPS games.

Halo has a signifcant sized fanbase now, and since Halo 3 is Microsoft's flagship title, it better have outstanding sales. And again, look at the game's competition in the FPS genre this gen. The best FPS games so far have been because of their single player components (Bioshock, THe Darkness) or have not been on 360 (Resistance). Other than that, you have the Orange Box, which just came out, and is not a casual game.

"Nevermind the fact that Halo 3 costs between $10 and $80 MORE."

That is a total garbage reason. You think people refuse to buy games now because they cost 10 dollars more than they did in 2001? Or 20-30 dollars more than in 1997? Thats adjusted for inflation and is dictated by the market. NEWSFLASH: in a 5 year span, COSTS INCREASE. And you do remember when SNES and N64 games were being sold for 50-70 dollars, right?

It was 2001

On topic I bought a PS3 for Metal Gear 4 only because its one of the greatest series to grace consoles if you ask me

3picuri3

hehe, you should try playing some other games maybe :) just to get some perspective. MGS might be fun, but it's nowhere close to being the greatest series, not by a long shot.. but that's my opinion.

True but I play more PC games anyways I just get the playstations for the Metal Gears since the PC versions suck hard

I recall a similar thread by Funnysquash. Maybe that's the one you're referring to. I made the same argument in there because he was trying to use certain pieces of fact to create a conclusion that said facts could not support alone.

What fuzzy needed is the same thing this thread needs.

A simple line graph, showing us the sales of PS2's 2 months before MGS launched...and 2 months after MGS launched. It would also have to include any other big games that may have released at the same time (because other games might have also impacted the sales if they were big).

If someone can find PS2 NPD reports from 2001 (or whatever year it was released) and make the chart themselves (or slide me that data), we can settle the matter once and for all.
