Poll PlayStation or Nintendo 64 (68 votes)

Playstation 57%
Nintendo 64 43%

Which console has more games, better games, and exclusives?

Instead of asking all consoles, its more fair to compare 1 vs 1, not 10 consoles vs 3 console.

that playstation one list.

for me there's the syphon filters, need for speed 3, gran turismos, soul blade, oddworld, legacy of kain, tekken 3, resident evil, silent hill, metal gear solid.

but i also remember the n64 being a great console to rent.

Lol, what is that list supposed to represent? All the good N64 and PS1 games? Why is the N64 list so short and where are games like Banjo Tooie, Diddy Kong Racing, Blast Corps, Wave Race, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Beetle Adventure Racing, 1080 Snowboarding, Turok 1-3, Paper Mario, F-Zero X, Pilotwings 64 and many more. I'd probably still go with PS1, but you're not being fair to the N64. I'd say that there are a select few games on the N64 that are better than the entire PS1 library, but the PS1 has much more GOOD games than the N64 does. The N64 also has a lot of crap, but the best games on the N64 are better than the best games on PS1.

Yes, that is definitely an unbiased representation of the N64 library.

I can't imagine not having both.

Goldeneye, Ocarina of Time, Banjo Kazooie, Diddy Kong Racing, Star Fox. All parts of my Childhood.

But I can't also live without Final Fantasy IX, Chrono Cross, or Crash Bandicoot.

I ain't voting.

My personal bias will always prefer the N64, but I had just started buying games for the PS1 (the game I got is unlisted) despite me playing games on that platform without ever owning them.

I probably would've said Playstation at the time, but Nintendo 64 games have aged better honestly. I can imagine playing Majoras Mask today but the low polygon count on PS1 games that are supposed to be more realistic detracts enormously from play. And I'm far from being someone obsessed with graphics.

Definitely a great time for JRPGs though on Playstation.

PlayStation had more games, but the N64 had better games.

Nothing on PlayStation ever made my jaw hit the floor in amazement over the revolutionary game I was playing like the first time I played Super Mario 64, GoldenEye 007, or Ocarina of Time.

And the N64 is still to this day, the best party machine ever! Whenever I had friends over, it was the N64 that we would play for hours; laughing and having a great time playing the N64's incredible library of multiplayer games like Mario Kart 64, Diddy Kong Racing, GoldenEye 007, Perfect Dark, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Super Smash Bros, the AKI developed wrestling games, NFL Blitz, F-Zero X, Mario Tennis, and Mario Party series.

Oh that's not fair, the Playstation has more games listed compared to Nintendo 64. Btw, they're both good consoles.

I enjoyed them both almost equally, but I gotta go with the PS1. I was still big into jrpgs at the time so that was enough to seal the deal. So many other greats too. I was about 10 years late to the party, but I find SotN to be one of the most replayable games of that gen.

N64 was great for the local mp though, couldn't get enough it. And (though I prefer MM) no other game ever blew me away like OoT did. Just seemed like such a massive leap for its time. Nothing on the PS1 ever gave me that wow factor. FFVII did impress me at release, but it just wasn't on that OoT level.

So yeah PS1 > N64, but it would've been a shame to miss out on either. I wish consoles were so vastly different from one another these days.

I also had both n64 and ps1 back in the day and I agree. Both had really great games with a slight edge to ps1 partly because of the jrpgs, my favourite jrpg is still FF7 to this day. But it would be a shame to miss out on Super Mario 64, OoT, Mario Kart 64, Wave Race, Star Fox etc

pretty much this. Paper Mario, Snowboard Kids, Blast Corps, RE2, Ogre Tactics, Mischief Makers all were fantastic games. While the PS1 has some of my favorite games of all time, they were mainly Square games. FF7-9, and the Parasite Eve games. The library had some duds (Superman 64) but overall I felt that the N64 beat the PS1 in the games department. .

Why have you listed so few games for the N64? Here's a better list:

Yoshi's Story

Banjo-Kazooie

Star Fox 64

Mario 64

The Legend of Zelda: MM

The Legend of Zelda: OOT

Smash Bros.

Goldeneye

Perfect Dark

Mario Kart 64

Blast Corps

Paper Mario

Wave Race

Mario Tennis

Mario Golf

Excitebike 64

Turok Series

1080 Snowboarding

Mario Party

Donkey Kong 64

Beetle Adventure Racing

F Zero X

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron

Banjo-Tooie

Resident Evil 2 (yes this was on N64 too)

Harvest Moon 64

Snowboard Kids 1/2

Duke Nukem 64

Kirby 64

Starcraft 64

Jet Force Gemini

Extreme G

Pilot Wings 64

I purchased a Playstation just for Tony Hawk. That was a system seller for me as I was very much into Skateboarding at the time. Ended up with a big library in the end and it was a fantastic console. The N64 wins it for me though. Countless hours on 4 player local co-op and game-changing releases like Mario 64 and OOT. Probably my favourite console full stop for those reasons.

@charizard1605: Indeed. Some of those games (Spider-Man, Resident Evil 2, even if they are not the superior versions) on the PS were also on the N64. Plus, he's missing some other Rare titles (Jet Force Gemini, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Banjo-Tooie), the Star Wars games (the N64 games, such as Rogue Squadron, Shadows of the Empire and Episode I Racer, were tons better than what was released on the PS), Rayman 2 (which granted, appeared on PlayStation, but from my understanding, the N64 version was the better version between the two), F-Zero X and the Turok series.

If only Nintendo was more open minded about CD-ROM at the time ... They lost massive exclusives like Final Fantasy series because of Systems really bad architecture along with super expensive Cartridges. They delivered some amazing exclusives though and saved the day a bit.

Sorry but RE2 was a time exclusive , lets not forget that. Also for every single title you mentioning there ... Only final fantasy 7 , i wont say 8-9 because itll be unfair , only FF7 >>> Every single title you just mentioned

Even then, FFL shouldn't have missed a good chunk of games in the N64 library. Damn, you'd find it okay if he added just one game from a Nintendo console and plethora of PS/XBOX games and you'd still find it okay.

So? Timed exclusive or not, it still ended up on the freaking N64.

I enjoyed my N64 way more than my PSOne. N64 had the better games, but obviously PS1 had a much larger library.

erm.. i think your missing one or two games from your n64 list..

also these console are so old that they are not at war with each other anymore. Both are classics in their own way, and for me neither is better than the other..

Nintendo's era ended with the N64. Sure they still had some good games as do their next gens but overall they lost the entire gaming package by losing third party support. And I don't think limitations in gaming means one wins. So by default Sony did surpass Nintendo. And it was due to Nintendo's arrogance that it happened.

Nintendo 64. Not only do its best games hold up, but they are often still the best even by today's standards.

Playstation is one of my favorites, as well. The problem with the playstaion is that a lot of the games don't hold up as well. Even game journalism was giving games like Battle Arena Toshinden and Gameday 98 great scores. Today they are hardly playable. **i still have a soft spot for Toshinden**

Playstation is still great. Still has great games. It only really bests the 64 on RPGs though.

Uh opinions on what holds up is your basis?

Yes, that is definitely an unbiased representation of the N64 library.

Sorry but ... PS1 destroyed N64 in total games , exclusives and multis.

If only Nintendo was more open minded about CD-ROM at the time ... They lost massive exclusives like Final Fantasy series because of Systems really bad architecture along with super expensive Cartridges. They delivered some amazing exclusives though and saved the day a bit.

Sorry, but... I disagree, and so do a lot of people.

PS1 had some amazing platformers that were some of the best available at the time. Nintendos reign in those type of games only came into it's own in the Wii era when the competition started getting into shooters. I'd play Medievil, Crash Bandicoot, 40 Winks, Spyro over Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie, DK64, Conkers etc. I feel nintendo evolved the genre farther than anybody else up until they reached the limit of platforming greatness with the Mario Galaxy series.

I respect OoT. It was an amazingly crafted game. But I didn't enjoy it like I did Mario, Banjo and Pilot Wings 64 etc. It was technically better than any PS1 game by the worlds standards. And I won't argue with that. But PS1 had both quantity and quality.

But here's some N64 games that I love (so you know I'm not being too biased).

  • Banjo Kazooie
  • Bomber Man 64
  • Chameleon Twist
  • Conkers Bad Fur Day
  • Diddy Kong Racing
  • Donkey Kong 64
  • Doom 64
  • F-Zero X
  • GoldenEye 007
  • Killer Instinct Gold
  • Kirby 64
  • Mario Kart 64
  • Mario Party 1 (didn't like the other 2)
  • Paper Mario
  • Pilot Wings 64
  • Pokemon Stadium
  • Rampage World Tour
  • Snowboard Kids
  • Star Wars Racer
  • Super Mario 64
  • Super Smash Bros.
  • TLoZ - OoT
  • TLoZ - MM
  • Wave Race 64
  • Yoshi's Story

These are what made me happy back in the day. There is an even longer list of PS1 games, but I cba to type them all out. Just know PS1>N64.

I'm not arguing opinions. I understand, appreciate, and respect what the PS1 did for gaming, and the fact that many people prefer that console. However, it goes the other way around too- the N64 was a revolutionary system that did so much, had so many classic games, and it is entirely possible to completely prefer that system and its games. Such as I do, and roughly 40% of System Wars (at the time of this posting) does.

Yeah I get you 100% mate. It's anybodys choice at the end of the day. The N64 and PS1 were both revolutionary. Just more so the PS1. It's funny how Sony have fell in a way. I mean, the whole reason the PS1 was so hyped all the way back from 1993 onwards was because of how massive Sony were in the 80's and 90's. They were like Samsung are now with phones for all electronic goods. When word got out that Sony were releasing a console, everybody instantly had faith that it would be something special because of their previous track record with other electronics. Nowadays, Sony are falling hard in most departments. And It's a shame. Yeah, PS4 is doing amazing. But it kinda has the PS1 and 2 impact to thank for that. The PS3 fell short because of it's own reasons as I'm sure you know. But the PlayStation franchise has always humbled me in a way when I look at what it has achived. Too many people on SW downplay it I think.

People who downplay PlayStation are ultimately either just trolling for the fun of it, or unnecessarily dumb. Yes, I like to make fun of PlayStation a lot, but any time I discuss it seriously, I am sure you have noticed me saying that it's simply the most consistently best line of consoles that there is. Apart from PS1 (which we just discussed haha) there has never been a PlayStation console that wasn't the best of its era.

Sony's fall was interesting, in that if they had played their cards right, they could have been what Apple is today. Instead, their arrogance and infighting caused their fall. I have hopes that this company returns to its former glory, but frankly, I don't expect that will ever actually happen- that ship has long sailed.

I had both consoles and would not have gone without either one without a doubt. Too many masterpieces between the two of them.

With that said, the original Playstation was so good that it propelled me toward becoming more serious about gaming as a medium, especially because of the more cinematic games like MGS or FFVII. I think back on the way that games like those blew me away then and realize that the industry was still taking baby steps at that time. That jump from one day playing Chrono Trigger, and then seemingly the next viewing an impressively detailed and expansive 3D world (lol, for the time at least...) ripe for the exploring was awe inspiring.
