Overall Results:

July game sales are up 19% year over year.

Hardware was up 29% year over year.

Console and Handheld game sales were up 17% year over year.

Physical and Steam PC software sales (for AAA games from participating publishers) were up 14% year over year.

Along with titles like Nier: Automata, Persona 5, Mass Effect: Andromeda, and Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, the RPG year-to-date sales have grown over 50 percent year-over-year.

- “The Nintendo Switch was July’s best-selling hardware platform,” NPD analyst Mat Piscatella said. “[That was] driven by new inventory released in support of the launch of Splatoon 2.”

- “Year to date, hardware spending has grown 20 percent versus 2016 to $1.6 billion,” Mat Piscatella said. “Performance of the Nintendo Switch continues to be the primary cause of the year-on-year gains.”

- Of course, none of this means folks have forgot about the PS4. That system doesn’t have supply problems, and Sony has built up an impressive lineup of games for it this year. That has led to it outselling all other hardware platforms year-to-date, according to Piscatella.

Looks pretty good all around with the hardware and software increases. Pretty crazy to see GTAV still going strong.

Can't believe how strong GTA V still is... unbelievable. It makes me worried that R* will go all out with the online functionality with the next one, at the expense of SP :(

Looks like Sony and ND hit the right price point.

They need to start making more new games and dropping them at $39 and start getting more bites like this from people who would have been sitting on the fence. It's working out well for them now so they should keep it going.

Nothing in stone says devs have to release games at $60 it's just what most have silently agreed to do. Sony should take a clue and follow the market and not rely on accepted industry norms.

That, plus the fact that Japanese games (which are supposed to be irrelevant to the larger market) are driving sales, I think can conclusively lay some arguments forwarded by, er, certain users when talking about game lineups.

Just to be clear, neither Sony nor Naughty Dog have anything to do with the pricing of Crash- that is all on Activision and Vicarious Vision, and those are the folks we should be crediting for this.

@lexxluger: I don't think that I'd use Crash as an example of pricing new games at $39 since that isn't a new game but a remaster which costs less to develop.

@charizard1605: I mean, a greater than 33% difference in revenue between the first and second spots would be pretty massive, especially since Splatoon 2 didn't have an explosive launch or anything. It only sold about 340k according to the leak. If it were over 500k I'd agree, but but Crash selling 400k would be reasonable.

Also, Switch only won by 5k so it's not exactly a big win.

well crash sold 30k in japan...and splatoon2 sold definitely more than 1 million so japan makes splatoon very profitable over crash...

and in usa splatoon beat crash this month..... launch month crash was #4 behind gta 5 in revenue...

crash sold well in the uk but japan is double the size of the uk..... and crash is only 39 dollars.....

great for a remaster/remake....but splatoon2 is definitely the bigger money maker and success.
