By "all time record," I mean that it's the most any console maker has ever made in operating profit in a single year. Sony's revenue is higher, though.

Description of Operating Results

1. Operating Results and Financial Positions for the Fiscal Year Ended March 31, 2021

(1) Operating Results and Financial State for the Fiscal Year Ended March 31, 2021 The results for this fiscal year (April 2020 through March 2021) showed strong software sales for Nintendo Switch, which contributed greatly to the growth of hardware sales. In particular, sales continued to grow for titles released in previous fiscal years, with units of Animal Crossing: New Horizons at 20.85 million (cumulative sales of 32.63 million units), Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at 10.62 million (cumulative sales of 35.39 million units), and Ring Fit Adventure at 7.38 million (cumulative sales of 10.11 million units). Super Mario 3D All-Stars and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, which were released this fiscal year as part of the Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary campaign, saw sales of 9.01 million units and 5.59 million units, respectively. In addition to Nintendo titles, sales of titles from other software publishers also continued to grow steadily, for a total of 36 million-seller titles for this fiscal year, including titles from these other software publishers.

As a result, hardware sales reached 28.83 million units (an increase of 37.1% year-on-year), and software sales reached 230.88 million units (an increase of 36.8% year-on-year).

Turning to our digital business for dedicated video game platforms, sales were strong for downloadable versions of packaged software for Nintendo Switch. Sales also grew for add-on content, including Pokémon Sword Expansion Pass, Pokémon Shield Expansion Pass, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Fighters Pass Vol. 2. In addition, sales of download-only titles and sales related to Nintendo Switch Online were also steady, helping to bring digital sales to 344.1 billion yen (an increase of 68.5% year-on-year).

For the mobile business, many consumers continue to enjoy playing our mobile applications, and our mobile and IP related income reached 57.0 billion yen (an increase of 11.3% year-on-year).

As a result, net sales reached 1,758.9 billion yen, with overseas sales of 1,361.4 billion yen accounting for 77.4% of the total. Operating profit came to 640.6 billion yen, ordinary profit was 678.9 billion yen, and profit attributable to owners of parent totaled 480.3 billion yen for this fiscal year.

Animal Crossing sold over 32 million units in 13 months! Absolute insanity! And MK8DX is going to outsell MKWii! And 36 games sold over 1 million units during the FY, likely not even including digital only games like Among Us! It's really shocking!

They're forecasting a decline in both hardware and software sales this year, but they have to make sure to avoid overestimating so it might just be conservative, especially the software. Selling another 25 million Switch units this year would be incredible, though! Last year's 28.8M is the most for any home console ever, and third most for any handheld. Switch has now outsold PSP, GBA, and Xbox 360, making it the 8th best selling hardware platform of all time. PS4 is currently 4th. If Nintendo's forecast is true, Switch will be in 5th place this time next year, likely surpassing PS4 by the end of 2023 to reach 4th place.

Launch-aligned, Switch is the fastest selling home console ever after 49 months! Much more impressive than 5 months. ;)

Looking ahead:

2. Outlook for the Fiscal Year Ending March 31, 2022

For Nintendo Switch, our goal is to continue to convey the appeal of the hardware and software and maintain sales momentum at a high level. Regarding the hardware, we will release a new blue color Nintendo Switch Lite in May. First-party software titles planned for global release include Miitopia in May, Mario Golf: Super Rush in June, and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD in July. In addition, the Pokémon series is receiving new additions with the planned release of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl in late 2021. Other software publishers also plan to release a wide variety of titles, and we will work to invigorate the platform with this continuous stream of new titles combined with existing popular titles.

In our mobile business, we are collaborating with Niantic to develop a new application featuring Pikmin for smart devices. This title is expected to be released by Niantic in the second half of 2021. We will also focus on efforts that encourage consumers to continue to enjoy playing the mobile applications we have previously released.

Through these initiatives, we expect to see results for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2022 of 1,600.0 billion yen in net sales, 500.0 billion yen in operating profit, 480.0 billion yen in ordinary profit, and 340.0 billion yen in profit attributable to owners of the parent.

The unit sales for key products used in these forecasts can be found on page 14 under the heading "(4) Consolidated sales units, number of new titles, and sales units forecasts" in the section titled “Others.” Assumed exchange rates for the major currencies are 105 yen per US dollar, and 120 yen per euro.

Regarding the risk associated with COVID-19, while the impact on business results for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2021 was limited, the supply of products might be affected if production and shipments are hindered. Other risk factors which are difficult to predict also continue to exist, involving areas such as development and marketing of products and services. In addition, the production of products might be affected by obstacles to the procurement of parts, including the increase in global demand for semiconductor components.

The consolidated earnings forecast is based on the premise that we will be able to secure the parts needed for the manufacture of products in line with our sales plans. The Nintendo group will take the necessary measures and continue business operations to provide an environment in which consumers can continue to enjoy Nintendo products and services.

Revenue breakdown:

This is the healthiest the gaming industry has ever been!

Good to see a company getting their profits from games and hardware, instead of solely microtransactions.

@techhog89: who was the poster that thought the Switch was going to fail and then once it broke records, stated it will stop around certain numbers, then later on continuing projecting it will stop at 60 million?

Probably one of the posters who was saying Nintendo needed to take lessons from Sony.

Take these numbers, and then compare them to the “impressive” numbers we got a week or so ago. It’s not quite broken down enough to definitively say this, but it’s a pretty safe assumption to say Nintendo Online is bringing in more revenue than Game Pass. That’s wild!

Sony and Nintendo are doing great, and as a gamer, that's just good news. Now Xbox? 23 studios later and the only news seems to be more and more old games coming to GamePass. Meanwhile, I'm playing my current GOTY Returnal!

So just because Microsoft is too embarrassed to reveal hardware sales that means other companies shouldn't either? You lemmings are miserable lol. Enjoy another year of HaloForza.

I don't deny that PS4's is higher, but attach rate is a weird metric. It tends to go up over time, but goes up fastest after hardware has peaked. Switch hasn't peaked yet, but PS4 did before 84 million. Last year boosted PS4's attach rate a lot for that reason as well.

And, again, Switch's total doesn't include digital-only games (which I imagine is a holdover from the Wii days). That leaves out quite a few indie games that sold best on Switch, and even some not indie games like the Ace Attorney Trilogy.

Uh... That was either emgesp (who admit that they were wrong at some point) or someone else I'm too lazy to look up who constantly claimed that Switch would peak in year 3 and then drop like a rock because Wii did.

To be fair, quite a lot of people. I remember when the Switch came out people kept moving the "numbers to be considered a success" goal because they wouldn't accept that it was becoming the fastest selling console in history. Well 4 years later you'd have to be blind not to acknowledge that the Switch is a resounding success all around. Good for Nintendo.

28.8M? I think if I remember correctly PS4 never passed 20M in a year ever. Switch will easily take over PS2's lifetime sales in half the time frame.

Yeah, releasing unfinished games sounds like a great idea.

BotW2 probably comes this year or early next though, on the same day as the upgrade.

Do you know what else is a new game for those buying into the Switch ecosystem in 2021? "Breath of the Wild." "Mario Odyssey." "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe." "Splatoon 2." Many, many more.

"What's coming out" is far, far less important to people buying a new console than what's available.

That's on you if you don't enjoy those games.

@luxuryheart: Super Mario World is an old ass game. Bowser's is like what? 5h long? The system is so starved for games that lets count a ldc/expansion as a brand new game.

I'll give you Rise, am i am excited to play it on pc, but lets not pretend that its not the emptiest MH ever released. I know they added some content, but not expecting much when its free.

Pokemon App is a cellphone game/app that should cost $4,99.

The Wii U flopped. To the people who haven't owned a Switch, which is the majority of Switch owners, that's a new game to them.

Monster Hunter games are jam packed with content, so even the emptier games have over 100h to log into the game.

It really does not have over 100h of content unless you're a fan of the series and just play for the sake of playing. The WiiU excuse will work on a non gamer, but someone who actually cares about Mario, has already played the game years ago. So no, it is not a new game.

I guess I'm a non-gamer then. Real gamers all bought the Wii U.

Really though, this is the weakest trolling I've seen here in a while. Using the "non gamer" argument from 10-15 years ago, flat-out lying about one game, calling another an "App" to discredit its existence when people have been waiting for it for over 20 years...

Really now? People been waiting for App 2 for 20 years? That might be the saddest thing i've heard this year. And stop pretending about people who care about Mario, Zelda, Metroid, etc did not own a WiiU. Just stop. I understand you have a lot of trouble damage controlling this pathetic year for Nintendo, but no, not working at all. If YOU did not buy a WiiU, it means that you didn't care about Nintendo games, because the WiiU might've flopped, but it still offered many games worthwhile if you're into Nintendo titles. So to you, an old game might be new, but to someone who actually likes Nintendo games, it isn't because he/she did own a WiiU, flop or not. So strop crying about the "trolling" each time you were proven wrong and move on already. Its not like its getting better later this year. Just boot up BotW and prentend its a holiday 2021 title.

@hardwenzen: What kind of drugs you smokin' bruh? Switch has put out a ton of good games lately, like MHR, Bravely Default 2, Story of Seasons, Trails of Cold Steel 3 & 4, Hyrule Warriors, Persona 5 Strikers... and SMT Nocturne R and SMT V, Mario Golf, Disgaea 6, Ys IX and Rune Factory 5 are around the corner.

You not liking those kinds of games is fine and all, but stop trolling your nonsense saying Switch hasn't been pumping out the games.

The record profits must be thanked due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

@goldenelementxl: or around 6-7 games per console.

I’d now like to address the Nintendo Switch business from a slightly different angle. One conventional metric used in the dedicated platform business is the tie ratio, or the attach rate of software per unit of hardware. This is calculated by dividing the number of software units sold by the number of hardware units sold. However, with the rise in digital sales, we are witnessing the rapid sales growth of indie titles at a wide range of price points, and add-on content sales that cannot be counted with the number of software units sold. As a result, software attach rate calculated using conventional methods no longer adequately reflects the actual state of our business.

Learn the way metrics are measured today and you will realize based on the current trajectory and the fact that Ps4 has been out far longer, that the Switch is on pace to beat it if you factor in store digital purchases (especially with indies), an area that Switch obliterates PlayStation and Xbox.

Just look at the release dates vs. total number of games for example.

Ps4: Released November 2013 Total games: 3192

Nintendo Switch Released March 2017 Total games 3806

Switch has been out 1/2 the time and has far more total games. By the end it will have more than double most likely.

Indies prefer the Switch so Switch will get more games and with indies factored in, Switch will have stronger ratios by the end of the generation.

Feel free to keep using old tired standards (we all know you love that) whatever fits your clearly faulty narrative right?

If that's pumping good games, then Stadia is killing it. 2020 and 2021 are the worse years i've seen a gaming company have in like 10 years.

They released one game worth talking about, and that's Rise. What do they have for Holidays? Who cares when we can play a 7y old game and pretend it came out in 2021. Btw i am not smoking anything, you're the one smoking Regie's farts, and that's why its looking like a fine year to you. That's how they get you easily.

@shadyacshuns: Agreed. There’s been quite a few games coming out on the Switch that I’ve been enjoying. Still have quite a few that I want to get that I haven’t gotten around to yet. I’ve been more then satisfied with the system myself.
