Microsoft originally got into the console business to "stop Sony", a former Microsoft executive has claimed, before suggesting that, even to this day, Xbox is "not a big money-making machine for Microsoft".

Speaking to IGN, Joachim Kempin, who worked as the VP of Windows Sales at Microsoft between 1983 and 2002, said that "the main reason [Microsoft entered the console space] was to stop Sony.

"You see, Sony and Microsoft they never had a very friendly relationship, okay? And this wasn't because Microsoft didn't want that.

"Sony was always very arm's length with Microsoft. Yeah, they bought Windows for their PCs but when you really take a hard look at that, they were never Microsofts friend. And Microsoft in a way wanted them to be a friend because they knew they had a lot of things we could have co-operated on because they are, in a way, an entertainment company, you know?

"I mean, at least a portion of Sony is and they had some really good things going there, but as soon as they came out with a video console, Microsoft just looked at that and said 'well, we have to beat them, so let's do our own.'"

According to IGN, Kempin claims that Microsoft felt threatened by Sony's presence in the living room, and concerned that its 'dominance of the traditional [PC] market' could be rattled by the ongoing convergence of computers and consoles. Kempin also revealed that he visited "several PC manufacturers" in the hope of convincing them to develop a console and prevent Microsoft from making a loss on manufacturing hardware - something the company failed to achieve.

"I went out to several PC manufacturers and tried to beg them to do the Xbox thing and keep the device manufacturing out of Microsoft," Kempin continued. "The guys were smart enough not to bite, because they studied the Sony model and saw that Sony could not make money on that hardware model, ever. So they supplemented it with software royalties, and Microsoft copied that model."

The original Xbox and Xbox 360 were initially sold at a loss, of course. But despite the hardware now expected to be turning a profit, Kempin claims that Xbox is still "not a big money-making machine for Microsoft". "There are actually two things," he added. "First, every developer who now has an Xbox game pays a small royalty to Microsoft for the honor of having it on that system.

"The other way they make money is that they finally got their act together on the services and actually thats where the money is being made. So theyre just maybe a little bit above breakeven, thats all there is. This is not a big money-making machine for Microsoft."

Microsoft is expected to announce its next-generation Xbox around March, with the latest rumors suggesting that the console may require an always-on internet connection.

They should worry less about Sony and more about how they are perceived by the world. They came across as a greedy money grabbing software company and now look much the same in two failed generations of console manufacturing.

If the whole purpose of MS entering the console race was to "beat Sony" or be first in sales, they have failed at every possible measure.

Good job with that, Microsoft-- after losing billions on the Xbox brand, you managed to lower Sony's profitability just in time for what could possibly be the last generation of conventional video game consoles.

I hope they don't outright beat sony this coming gen.  Would be awfully boring with only one major console and no competition.

Which wasn't really Microsoft's doing. Sony was just made stupid mistakes, one after another and Microsoft took advantage of it.

Microsoft are playing in a race thats far bigger than just gaming and Sony. They're competing against the giants like Apple and Google to get a spot in everyones living room. Thats why they aren't bothered with making a loss

Didn't beat them but sure as hell woke them the **** up, MS brought down the competitive pain something Sony hasn't felt in awhile. Hopefully next gen (well this Gen since WiiU is out) is more competative then the last. MS and Sony were just happy being toe to toe and not budging, gen went on for far too long.

if nintendo didn't die with some of their system don't meeting expectations i really doubt sony gaming division will go out of business unless they have problems somewhere else that force them to quit gaming.

Sounds like Microsoft lacks confidence in its ability to remain relevant by virtue of its own product.  Pretty sad.

I mean, take all that money spent on the Xbox brand and redirect into R&D for Windows and building new code that isn't vulnerable as hell, and they wouldn't have to worry so much about being phased out.

This would had failed if Sony hadn't gotten their heads stuck up their asses this gen, most of Sony's damages were self-inflicted. With that said, the PS4 is likely to be my main for gen 8.

If it wasn't for the Xbox, the PS3 wouldn't have become what it had become...that bloated overfeatured heavy device. MS introduced a better gpu/harddrives and just an overall better interface/online. Why do you think ken acted the way he did...he felt threatened and was in fear.

M$ is a scum money sucking company. They have the Majority of Americans buying their Xbox's feeding their greed with Xlive and all their other crap you have to buy only from them if you have an Xbox. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER XBOX CONSOLE EVER AGAIN! Nore will anyone who lives in my house.
