Sony first reported that 1 million in 24 hrs on the ps4 2 days after launch and they only launched in two regions, but MS reported 1 million number on same day of launch for Xone when they launched in 13 countries... At the very least you have to admit this is a little suspicious lol. Those numbers they reported are most likely shipped numbers but they are saying its units sold to consumers, sounds like BS

I work in the industry and currently hold a chartered accountant designation and I can tell you an "inventory adjustment" is not outside legal boundaries a company has to show sales or revenue. It is common practice to have inventory adjustments in large amounts for such large companies. The decision will come down to an auditor, if they feel the amount of money "adjusted" is material to the situation or the company. The big question will be if Microsoft stepped outside of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act which is made to protect the public and investors from false leads or false information.

$900 Million is a large amount, of course, but when dealing with a company like microsoft who has a stupid amount of sales each year it could prove to not be material enough.

Worse case scenario, A few people get fired and they pay a fine. This situation is very tame compared to most as recording an adjustment in a different fiscal period to help the bottom line in another does not directly affect the public.

Interesting to see this on a video game forums but it's what you'd expect from fan boys I guess.

Their not violating GAAP... Violating GAAP would be doing some kind of adjustment to turn those left over items in inventory into potential sales or trying to count them towards sales... They simply waited for another fiscal period to report and do the adjustment. The law they potentially violated is the sarbanes oxley act.. The article suggests they didn't report information... you don't need to report that a potential adjustment is on the way.

This is why you don't hire profit/loss suits, especially ones that came up more on the operations/sales side of things instead of the product development side, to run tech companies. It's actually kind of funny how Steve Jobs and Bill Gates both made the same mistake. Jobs choose Cook whose background was in supply chain management. This of course was after picking John Sculley, a sales and marketing guy from Pepsi, to be Apples first CEO when it went public in the 80's. After Job's left Apple went downhill under Sculley while Job's started Pixar.

Then you have Balmer who was Gates first business manager as well as the head of various sales divisions. Basically when you put these guys in charge the focus usually goes from making the best possible product to repackaging old ideas as well as nickle and diming customers. Part of the reason Microsoft didn't want to abandon Metro in Windows 8 is because they really liked the idea of having a tile for the Microsoft app store, which would have looked like traditional bloatware in previous versions of Windows.

Tech companies thrive by being innovative and forward thinking. This is why Google is not going anywhere anytime soon. Googles process is almost always product first, profit second. Same with Valve, which ironically is run by a former Microsoft employee. Yes it's counter intuitive but putting profit before the product is no different then putting the cart before the horse. So in short it's no surprise that Microsoft is only treading water at this point.

After the 2008 crash, Sony's numbers are a small fraction of what they once were. You can say they aren't bleeding money, but they are a shadow of their formal selves. As a company, their sales figures are relatively minor compared to their glory days in the 80s and 90s. Their TV sales real killed them over the past few years. Samsung is eating their lunch... and rightly so. Meanwhile, Microsoft's numbers have remained constant since the crash. They didn't get the huge hit most tech companies suffered. They didn't grow, but they didn't get in the red either.

Not that any of this really has any place in this forum... I understand when people discuss console sales figures, but this one is a real stretch.

I'll take the broke company that doesn't lie to their consumers over the one that does.
