In your opinion (!), what's the worst game that GS has ever awarded goty?

I may not personally like Gears of War or WoW, but you would have to be oblivious to the contributions both of those games made to their respective genres. For Gears of War, they're the first game to use arguably the most popular game engine this generation, and the cover system? Check out Mass Effect, GTA 4, Uncharted and every other TPS out in the market. (technically, Kill Switch is the game that influenced Gears of War, but that's like saying that the Pixies influenced Nirvana). Personally, I feel that Demon's Soul is the weakest GOTY of this gen. Arguably, the only reason why Gamespot even picked Demon's Soul is because it's an abnormality amongst JRPGs, and that's it.hiphops_savior

not because of the innovative online mechanics? you know, how the single player is completely integrated the with multiplayer aspect of the game. seemlessly shifting in and out of SP + MP without having to go through menus or exit your game. being able to play as the actual 3rd dungeon 3rd boss for OTHER people's games? no - not an optional boss, one required to advance in the game. seeing other players ghosts running around and seeing how they died before you attempt a similar part..

Gears for sure.

Its a relatively generic shooter that introduced a cover system (and no it wasn't the first TPS to do this, Killswitch was I believe), and in no way did it deserve to beat what was arguably the best RTS of the decade (Company of Heroes).

I have to vote for Gears. Not just becasue it beat Twilight Princess, but because it truly is the weakest game on that list IMO.JAB991

i never heard of the 1997 winner, so i'm going with that one. also, each one of the winners that i played deserved it. maaaaybe not gears, but i can't remember much stuff released in 2006... the gamecube was kinda dead back then and the wii wasn't out yet :PBrunoBRS

The Wii came out towards the end of 06 and Twilight Princess pretty much won awards on almost everywhere besides GS, where it flopped.:P Honestly, 06's GOTY to me was TP followed by probably Okami on PS2.:)

Oh and TC, I'd say Gears 1 and WoW just like everyone else.:P Paper Mario Thousand should've won 04 and TP/Okami in 06. :x

I haven't played all of them on the list, but out of those that I have played, I'd say Wind Waker. To me, the game was full of boring exploration and easy dungeons. I played it over again recently to see if it would be better after all these years, but that didn't work out too well.

MGS4 and Demon's Souls...

Demon's Souls, while being an amazing title, was not better than DAO or UC2. (my friend would kill me if he saw me say that)

MGS4... well in my opinion that is the most overrated game of all time, but it really wasn't up against anything much better. 2008 sucked for game eh? I would say Fallout 3 is better than MGS4.

WoW. It's just.....wrong.

Okami should have won GOTY over TP. Although TP was still a AAA game IMO. I haven't really played Gears at length to comment, and Oblivion made me fall asleep :P

I don't see how Chrono Cross is overrated tbh. I never even heard of the game until 2003 when I first played it, and I basically haven't heard of it since (and I browse 3 different gaming forums every day). Maybe its critical appraise could be considered overrated, but I don't think it's overrated among the community. Maybe it just doesn't have the vocal fanboys that other games have. CC is my fav game of all time Lethalhazard

EDIT: and to be honest it's pretty rare for me to be able to finish a game...I usually never do

It's fun that, although I like the newer games, my all time favorites are from the late 90's (Grim Fandango, Total Annihilation, ...).
I don't know why but it seems that newer games don't have that little thing that make them a master piece...

Gears claims 3x as many votes as MGS4 in this thread. nor is anyone voting MGS4/Gears giving real justificatiions to why they didn't deserve the award.

you and TC are wrong in your 'MGS4 SW hate' assumptions. and the best part is that Gears 1 can't even be considered exclusive. you'd think that might lessen the 'hate' that is always claimed around here. but it sure doesn't help Gears.

They're hardly assumptions. Just look around for christ's sake.

About Gears not deserving goty imo; as I have already said, the cover system was cool and it was pretty unique, but that one gameplay mechanic alone shouldn't be enough to warrant goty. The graphics were very nice, but again, not something that should garner goty. I found the gameplay to get somewhat monotonous after a while, and it did little to break up the constant shooting.

The sections where it did try something different were the worst parts of the game for me. The driving section was utter crap, and the part where you gotta stay in the light so as to not get ripped to shreds by Kryll was pretty tedious. The final boss on the normal difficulty setting was a complete pushover. I find Gears to be one of the more overrated games, but I still thought it was great (I gave it a 8.5).

Honestly though, I find the two games completely different. Other than sharing the same story(which isnt really apparent until later in the game) the two have barely anything in common. The elements are shared, but CC focuses on them much more than CT did. And I think there were a few more elements in CC if im not mistaken.

I prefer CC over CT, but both were stunning games.

Every post in here should be for Serious Sam. It's not that it is a bad game, it's just not of the caliber of the other games listed.

Thats a great line up right there, Gears doesn't belong on it though (the second one improved a lot on its short comings luckily). Those games are all still great to play to this day, Gears still looks nice but it was too shallow an experience.

Was serious sam really a goty? that gets my vote too if so, fun yes but again shallow.
