Poll If Half-Life: Alyx turns out to be the bee's knees, will it push you to buy a VR headset? (57 votes)

Yeah. If the game is awesome, I'll be convinced, and will buy a VR headset. 32%
Maybe. I'm a fence dweller, what can I say. 14%
No. And no. 46%
Last night I woke and could not move. There was something on the ceiling, a thin and long cat or a long, thin non-cat that grew longer the longer I watched. I am still watching. I in fact am never not-watching, ever. I am not here. I am not sure if I woke up, actually. Or if I fell asleep. Or if I have always been asleep. 9%

Assuming you don't already own a PCVR headset that can run it, of course (the game, for now, is not coming to PSVR). If this game is a banger, and it revolutionizes VR yada yada, will you join the VR wagon? It looks pretty good to me, personally. I think Valve will probably pull through. I could be wrong, though. Either way, I'll be playing as this girl in VR day one:

I gave VR a go from the start with the first Vive. Can’t play it as I’m incredibly sensitive to motion sickness. I’m getting nauseated just thinking back on it. Too bad too as it’s a tech I’d love to be able to use.

Polish friend offered to give me Vive for free, but i'm not an asshole, he'll get a respectful purchase price.

In the beginning, I definitely got sick a few times. But I stuck it out. Now I'm incapable of getting even slightly nauseous in VR. Once your brain adapts, it knows what's up.

Donno not actually bought it yet.

The main complaint I've seen though is the build up of sweat when it comes to Vive.

Wake me up when a VR headset and controller combo costs $275 Canadian. I am convinced that the only way that will happen is if a Kickstarter campaign aims to reduce the entry price of SteamVR.

You get what you pay for. It will be shit tier at that price based on current manufacturing costs. Costs have already come down quite a bit. Oculus Rift S will be on sale for $349 USD during Black Friday deals. That is your best bet if you want a quality headset and controllers for cheap.

Truth. You gotta cough up the cash if you want top o' the line. High quality VR ain't cheap to make.

If you're already an avid PCMR gamer, you likely already have the hefty part out of the way. You'll just need the headset. Oculus Rift S will be $350 on Black Friday. WMR headsets go as low as $150 during some sales.

Confirmed: there's going to be 3 Valve VR games. Valve also mentioned today there will be more games in the Half Life universe, as this Half Life Alyx has energized them again. Not sure if those future HL games will be VR or 2D, but the fact that Valve is making more Half Life anything is huge news.

Even if I still have my HTC Vive, I was done with Valve a long time ago. Not interested what they make now and HL is a thing in the past.

At least HLVR will put the hurt on EGS. That right their says alot. Lets see how far EGS can go since they don't have VR on their side😁

Nope. Even if I could afford it, I'm not going to buy it for one game. I just don't think it's different enough from normal gaming either. I'm willing to try games with new control schemes and/or that require you to stand, but an expensive headset that just makes a 3-D effect slightly more immersive? No thanks.

@theone86:Most games I don't even stand. The control scheme is pretty natural, there's no real learning curve at all and it's not slightly more immersive, it's a huge leap like 480p to 4k.

I might get a pc headset (already have psvr), if I can get one in 6months for $500. I've been wanting one for a while anyway with or without this game. I just want to upgrade my PC first.

This is pretty much what I think is happening. The pettiest of the petty lash out because it reminds them of a childhood experience where their friend got a nice toy and they didn't.

But this is especially great because now we get the spurned ex-lovers of Valve ("Wahhhhh where is Half-Life 3 wahhhhh") and the jealous VR have-nots all in one area.

It's a shitstorm.

@npiet1: But I don't mind standing and I don't mind new control schemes, I just don't think an increase in resolution is worth the money. I've never been one of those people that goes to an IMAX movie and thinks "man, these images are amazing, but you know how they could be even better..." I get that there are people who are like that, it's just not my thing.

And $500, damn, that's a small fortune to me. That'd practically get me this Gretsch I've been eyeing, or 1/4 of next semester's tuition.

@mrbojangles25: Dude, have fun with Alyx, seriously, but I've been waiting twelve years for a resolution to a massive cliffhanger that was supposed to be resolved in a sequel they told us 100% was on the way at the time, and the first thing we hear in years about the property is that they're doing a prequel. At this point, I'd take a five minute flash video if they could just give me some damn closure.

Yea. Kind of bought one today after I watched the trailer several times. Though, to be fair, I was already looking at VR because of Beat Saber, Boneworks, etc. This just pushed me over the edge.

There's no way in hell I'm buying a VR headset for one game under 20 hours.

Yeah but the difference is it's like seeing as you would without a headset but it's a game... Everywhere. Also that $500 is aud and yeah it's still a small fortune but the tech cost a lot to make, so I under stand the price. If I can I will go second hand as well.

I think a lot of people simply say they don't because of the price tag that comes along with VR and not necessarily the experience it provides. Half Life Alyx will be a full length game with all the bells and whistles of a half life game. Design wise VR opens doors for the game, but can also close them as traditional controls give other options (faster pace, more precise) as well. But what we will see in Half Life Alyx budget wise, we would've seen in Half Life 3. So this game is a good way to set the bar for Half Life 3 and tone down the unrealistic hype it has gained over the last 15 years.

Alyx will be a AAA game, but no game is worth a single investment of a piece of kit of more than 100$ to me.

You think that people who don't want to play VR garbage can't afford it lol, some of us are just smart enough not to waste money on gimmicks such as this. You who claims to know what "quality" is can't even tell that VR is not quality, lol I love it :)

I already own too many devices, and to be honest, i am kind of moving in the opposite direction of VR. VR is the best for solo gaming, but i find that local multiplayer with friends is what brings me the most joy.

Maybe VR is great, but i am only interested as a a temporary experience. Something to rent and enjoy for a while with friends. I dont want another piece of hardware taking space in my place unless i use it all the time.

PS: I have used first generation VIVE in a store before. They were changing for the hour and I tested a game that you could dodge bullets and shoot. I really enjoyed it and didnt get sick at all. The experience was great, but i will still not buy it.

Again, have you tried a high end VR setup? If you had, you would clearly see that VR offers a great experience that is different from traditional gaming. Advanced headsets like Valve Index already offer large improvements over older headsets with higher resolution, better lenses, higher refresh rates, and larger FOV. The quality of the hardware keeps getting better and the games will too. AAA games like Half-Life: Alyx will help evolve the VR platform.

Nope. A bit sad that I wont play the new Half-Life game, but it's just not worth the cash when you don't have a lot of cash.

It's funny reading some of these comments. How many of you anti VR people have actually tried a high end VR setup? Do you guys just talk shit because you can't afford it?

You think that people who don't want to play VR garbage can't afford it lol, some of us are just smart enough not to waste money on gimmicks such as this. You who claims to know what "quality" is can't even tell that VR is not quality, lol I love it :)

VR's been around for a few years now and 99% of the games are garbage and the other 1% are meh. Half Life's not going to suddenly make VR relevant no matter how much you want it to. If there's one thing that VR isn't, is quality.

When will you people wise up and realise most people use it for porn.

Nope, definitely not for just one game, even if it's a Half-Life game.

I kinda feel bad for these people who are too poor to afford VR.

I have a Oculus Rift but I haven't used it in a year.I enjoyed it but to be honest I'm more interested in to see what next gen VR will be like. Also I kinda of hate having the senors on my desk it just gets in the way it's a pain to set up I'm not going to dig out my headset from my closet for one game.
