[QUOTE="GOGOGOGURT"][QUOTE="darkspineslayer"]Very influential in that we can hold it responsible for the current generic brown/grey FPS cancer on the industry. Most influential/important? Hell no.darkspineslayer
Actually that would be COD.
1. Halo popularizes the console FPS, and makes it work well. One of the first 'brogames' 2. Halo 2 popularizes the online FPS, cements the console online shooter in popular culture. 3. Activision reinvents its call of duty franchise to be less conserned with historical accuracy, and to focus on fast paced online play 4. ?????????? 5. Very few games outside of Call of Duty or it's clones make nearly as much profit and as such, developers and publishers are less keen on trying anything new. NO... There were several successful FPS before Halo on consoles,Golden Eye sold 8 million copies on N64 before the xbox was even born,i don't know what you mean by popular but 8 million units on those days were allot. Medal of honor.? Rainbow six. Quake UT Halo got so big on xbox because it was basically the only decent thing to own on the console for a long time, and MS big money push they invested like 400 million promoting the game alone.. Games like Socom were pretty popular even more than xbox live, like i posted here in page 2 Socom 2 was getting more playing hours daily than all of xbox live games combined, the only game that beat it on xbox was Halo and because Halo had 8 million users, unlike Socom 2 which had like 2 million or less. If Halo would have not hit COD would be as popular still,COD is not a Halo clone is a war game which on PC and on consoles there have been by the ton.johnnykage go back to troll school or go find a tutor i here loosey charges a decent rate hourly i table a motion to derail into a ponythread. Before Halo games and consoles were seen as toys. When Halo came out it changed everything and proved gaming can be a serious form of entertainment like movies. Halo 2 made online a standard for consoles and paved the way for games like Call of Duty. So without Halo gaming would have never evolved into the huge form of entertainment it is today.

I used to think halo was pretty influential, but other than it and goldeneye proving there was a huge shooter market on consoles as well as paving the way for way for the shooter control scheme on consoles, I don't think it was very influential mechanics wise. I mean there's really no other shooters on consoles that play like it.
Considering Wolfenstein wasn't the first FPS, I'm not sure that's a great example.[QUOTE="Sali217"][QUOTE="OB-47"]
Being the first doesn't mean the most important.
The first car isn't as important as say, the Ford Model T, which was the first mass produced car, or the Beetle.
Goyoshi12
Whatchoo talking 'bout Sali? O_o
Wolfenstein is more like the Model T i n that example. The trend setter that often gets credited with being the "original" it was original in a lot of ways but it wasn't the first FPS, technically speaking MIDI maze for the Atari ST was the first FPS. It's a technicality I will admit. No, that is Mario.
Halo just made the FPS more accessible for the modern era when it was released and made online console gaming good. Today however Halo has actually become pretty stagnant and has outdated game play, it has lost it's spot to COD which is the superior game IMO. A lot of former Halo fans left it for COD.
But Halo still is a good FPS in it's own right and no one can really top it's features.
Actually Halo didn't bring the regenerating health mechanic to the FPS genre, and in fact the original halo didn't even have regenerating health it had a regenerating energy shield. Oddly coincidently regenerating health was used in a rehash of MIDI maze called faceball 2000 for the SNES and Genesis and also a wolverine game of some sort for the SNES and Genesis both released in 1994.Without Halo gaming wouldn't be as good as it is right now. Halo brought the regenerating health mechanic, one of the most important gameplay elements since gaming was created.

I think regenerating health has made games a bit too easy now, I know virtually every game uses them but it's kinda hard to die in a lot of them now. Just wait behind cover, health comes back, kill enemies, hid behind cover ect....
Part of the reason why I'm so excited about The Last of Us, no regenerating health! But they said they are trying to make the game hard, but I don't think regenerating health would work with that type of game. Like RE6 now has health regeneartion, I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not.

Half-Life and MGS are popular but not important. What other games have they influenced? GTA and Mario are the only other franchises that belong in this discussion.Oh no you didn't!
Now son, I know you just didn't diss on Freeman and Snake now! You best not be hatin on Valve or Kojima, those guys have done FAR more for gaming than Bungie or your precious Xbox ever has and ever will!
I...I just don't know what to think about you anymore.....there's no way anyone can think such a thing. It's impossible!
The first 2 were an(not most) important factor in console history. CE for it's mechanics and overall design, and H2 for its network. The others are just games.
Top 20 maybe?
drummerdave9099
Top 10. Although the tc is insane fanboy that believes he invented the question mark, Halo is very much pop culture, at least in the states.
yup agree Halo invented the FPS genre and thats the reason the 360 dominates WWdevilsoultaker2Yes let's ignore the fact every game Valve spews out is of the highest quality.

Its funny because hes serious.

That's impossible! No one would be stupid enough to ignore Half-Life, Grand Theft Auto III, Metal Gear Solid, The Legend Of Zelda, Counter Strike, World of Warcraft or any of the literally dozens to hundreds of titles that could deserve the title of "most important franchise in history".
I refuse to believe anyone is so stupid as to ignore those games, because from an objective standpoint Halo is factually not the most important franchise, and the absurdity of such a claim would lend itself to a joke, and only as a joke.
Half-Life and MGS are popular but not important. What other games have they influenced? GTA and Mario are the only other franchises that belong in this discussion. MGS revolutionized stealth games and half life CREATED the modern fps, without half life, halo would not even be a sperm in the testes of Microsoft[QUOTE="Gue1"]Actually Halo didn't bring the regenerating health mechanic to the FPS genre, and in fact the original halo didn't even have regenerating health it had a regenerating energy shield. Halo was very important because it brought FPS to consoles better then any game before it. But XBL was full of online shooters before Halo 2 (Rainbow 6 3, Ghost Recon, etc).
Super Mario Bros, Pong, PacMan, Super Mario 64, Street Fighter, Phantasy Star, Final Fantasy, Knights of the Old Republic where all more important titles IMO
