I'd say Half-life, Quake, Doom and Tribes were all much more important than Halo although Halo did bring about tons of screaming kiddies yelling obscenities through Live lol
[QUOTE="darkspineslayer"]Very influential in that we can hold it responsible for the current generic brown/grey FPS cancer on the industry. Most influential/important? Hell no.GOGOGOGURT
Actually that would be COD.
1. Halo popularizes the console FPS, and makes it work well. One of the first 'brogames' 2. Halo 2 popularizes the online FPS, cements the console online shooter in popular culture. 3. Activision reinvents its call of duty franchise to be less conserned with historical accuracy, and to focus on fast paced online play 4. ?????????? 5. Very few games outside of Call of Duty or it's clones make nearly as much profit and as such, developers and publishers are less keen on trying anything new.[QUOTE="GOGOGOGURT"][QUOTE="darkspineslayer"]Very influential in that we can hold it responsible for the current generic brown/grey FPS cancer on the industry. But HALO uplifted the console FPS. It was Activisions choice to generalize it.
Um...no, that belongs to Wolfenstein and Doom in the FPS genre.

Being the first doesn't mean the most important.
The first car isn't as important as say, the Ford Model T, which was the first mass produced car, or the Beetle.

I'm just trying to be "politically correct."
Don't want someone to come in and be all hipster and say, "HEY! WOLFENSTEIN CAME OUT BEFORE DOOM AND IT DID A LOT MORE WITH THE FPS GENRE THAN DOOM EVER DID, ASDASFJKLABSDKFBHKDBAHKSD!"
Well if you're only talking about consoles and only talking about the fps genre then.... oh, still no.
But at least it would be up there as arguably one of the most important if you narrowed it down to that. As it stands, for better or for worse, CoD has had made a bigger splash than Halo. Not to mention the countless fps games that came before.
And I see you're quick to discount MGS even though it popularized the stealth genre for a brief time and spawned other stealth titles including Splinter Cell by Ubisofts own admission. On top of that (again for better or for worse) it popularized the idea of cinematic game experiences.

Don't ever be PC. Say what you want Goyoshi! ARE YOU A MAN OR A SLAVE?
Actually, I'll go out on a limb (FLAME SHEILD ON) and say Halo is probaby ONE of the most importat FPS's of all time? Can we all agree to that?
Bardock47
Sure.
No.
Star Wars, D&D, Warhammer (StarCraft and Warcraft are based on it) GTA, Mario, FF, Warcraft, StarCraft, Diablo, Pac-Man, Doom etc.
Go right ahead, it helped the Console FPS so it is important, but not THE most important in all of gaming.Actually, I'll go out on a limb (FLAME SHEILD ON) and say Halo is probaby ONE of the most importat FPS's of all time? Can we all agree to that?

Getting Bioshocky up in here but...you know what...yeah...I am a MAN! @#$% Wolfenstein! Who cares if it was the first? Fine thanks for being the prototype, now you are obsolete and we don't need you anymore now that we have Doom!
Oh and TC, @#$% your Halo! What did it give us? Regenerating health? Pssh...that's nothing. In fact, actually, I'd also include not only Doom but Duke Nukem 3D thanks to Duke and his level designs, humor, and even his little tweaks and adjustments to the first person shoot design. Doom and Duke are the true franchises that are the most important to the FPS genre's history. Not your stupid Halo! GET DAT $#!+ OUT OF MY FACE!

I would argue that, as far as making games a aserious art form or whatnot, something like Silent Hill 2 or Shattered Memories is far more qualified in that respect.
I would add Final Fantasy VII to this list too. This is what really got Playstation off the ground real good. The original Playstation is what even got mainstream, hardcore gaming off the ground, period. Sony paved the way for Microsoft to come in the way they did. Yeah, they brought online to the table with Halo 2. I gotta give Microsoft that, but they also gave us the run around as well with all of their garbage machines that always broke down. I see the occasional red eye of death from 360 slims too, and now they are saying it's too hard to make new IPs, so they gotta stay wtih Halo, Gears, and Forza. If it wasn't for Halo, m$ probably wouldn't have gotten the xbox off the ground yes, so it was very important but...
A few games Off hand I can think of that are more important.
Mario bros. - Saved the industry, without it, nintendo wouldn't have brought the industry back so strong or quickly.
Pong - First real game, really fun, causual, created interest in the industry.
Mario 64 - 3d games basically all sucked before this came out. It showed people how it was done, and alot of copying occured. Zelda 64 to a similar but lesser extent.
TopTierHustler
Half-Life and MGS are popular but not important. What other games have they influenced?JohnnyCageMKQuite a lot.
Please tell me what games ever tried to copy Half-LifeJohnnyCageMKThe surge of shooters that to this day, focus on story driving the plot told through rigidly scripted sequences. From the likes of Halo to COD or Medal of Honour, they owe it to Half Life. Your view on gaming as a collective is disturbingly simplistic. Not bright in the slightest either.
[QUOTE="razgriz_101"]Lol final Fantasy, Mario, being important.its been an important franchise the past decade but its not AS important as people think.
I'd say if we want to be important things like Pac man,Doom,Mario,Final Fantasy,GTA and such are far more important.
pegalamp-
eh they have had massive amounts of impact on the industry especially mario.
FF is on there as its widely considered to be one of the first JRPG franchises to break into the mainstream in the west and crossover well, aswell as being one of the biggest titles and innovators in the late 90's everyone making a JRPG at the time was playing catchup to them on the PS1 to be brutally honest with maybe the exception of Suikoden.
Also at its time of release it was a really nifty and innovative battle system back in the day with FF1 not to mention it brought square back from the brink.
thats massive in terms of importance, the gaming landscape would be diffrent without it as its influence has seeped into other genres aswell.
[QUOTE="JohnnyCageMK"]SOCOM II logs more player hours than ALL of Xbox Live As the summer months continue to warm up, PlayStation 2 gamers are beating the heat, and beating up each other, by playing more games online. We are seeing a huge uptake in the amount of gamers that are playing online since early May. Perhaps its because school has ended and gamers are finding more time to frag their friends online, or maybe its purely due to beating the heat waves, but the numbers dont lie. There has been a marked increase in the number of online players for the top online console game SOCOM II: U.S. Navy SEALs. Here are a few of the updated numbers for SOCOM II. Stay tuned for more great SOCOM II news in the very near future. Since May 1st 2004 SOCOM II has averaged 373,000 player hours per day. By itself, SOCOM II is logging more player hours daily than ALL Xbox titles worldwide. The total numbers of player hours for SOCOM II is fast approaching 94 million hours, or the equivalent of 10,835 YEARS of straight gameplay. Even nine months after launch, SOCOM II is still seeing more than 30,000 simultaneous users per day, far and away more than any other console title. That is like logging on and playing SOCOM II with the entire graduate and undergraduate student population of the University of Southern California! On any average day, there are more than 103,000 unique SOCOM II accounts logging-in, which is equivalent to the entire capacity of the University of Michigan Stadium, one of the largest sporting venues in the United States. This many people are playing SOCOM II everyday!! http://www.gamezone.com/news/socom_ii_logs_more_player_hours_than_all_of_xbox_live For all of those who don't know history... So Socom II logged more hours that all of xbox live BEFORE Halo 2 came out in November. Reach still gets more than 103,000 unique players a day despite 2 new call of duty's coming out after it. http://www.bungie.net/stats/reach/online.aspxBefore Halo games and consoles were seen as toys. When Halo came out it changed everything and proved gaming can be a serious form of entertainment like movies. Halo 2 made online a standard for consoles and paved the way for games like Call of Duty. So without Halo gaming would have never evolved into the huge form of entertainment it is today.
