arkham's combat seems really overrated on here
black_chamber99
What didn't you like about it? I thought it was perfect for the game.
For me, Penumbra: Overture. Hold mouse down, move mouse back, then foward rapidly for a melee attack. So awkward to use but it heightens the fear of going into combat.
Always been a fan of the kingdom hearts combat system. Im sure most people on this forum would strongly disagree with me though.rickatickNot me rick, i love it. Its like Star Ocean too.
Agreed. It may have not been the best executed, but it was among the most unique in regards to melee in a 1st-person game.Condemned 2 was tons of fun and had some cool moves. SPYDER0416
The combat of both games take minutes to learn and years to master.
Both games are masterpieces of game design IMO.
FPS based: "Quake 3 Arena".
Very fast paced, rocket jumping and strafe jumping plus a variety of weapons without aim restriction on movement.

Melee/FPS combined: "Savage: The Battle for Newerth" (XR)
Fast paced leap vs block, simple but absolutely brilliant. Weapons don't have aim restriction on movement either.

prince of persia warrior within obviously
best sword combat game ever
i bet you cant give me a better game with better combat
ninga gaiden sigma 2 required no brain power it was just press random buttons
ac brother hood i havent played it but it sounds like you just off roofs and just use a hidden blade
so basically prince of persia wins
Quake 3 for action games, Jagged Alliance 2 for Strategy
Mount & Blade has the best medieval action combat system ever.
RyuRanVII
Absolutely. My favorite part was horse archery and the combat gets even better with mods. My only disappointment is that spears seem to be rather weak in vanilla. Throwing an axe or javelin on a charging enemy knight's face never gets old.
This thread is so vague in it's elaboration that I can't think of anything since there is so much to think about. Action(fighters, BEMUPs, platformers, shooters) games? Or maybe a combination of those in an Action Adventure, or one of those in a RPG? Or something turn based on a RPG? Or not, better a Strategy game or a strategy game in real time? If so 4X, RTS, RTT? Or something else I'm forgetting to mention?
Yeah and it's fairly unique in that it's basically one button and they just made a ridiculously good animation system so it looks nice. Plus there wasn't a ton of straight up combat sections it was always broken up with stealth and sleuthing then you got the nice pay off of smashing some guys up every now and again.Arkham Asylum's fighting flows very well.

Thank you finally someone mentions twewyI'm surprised there is no The World Ends With You mentioned. that's one crazy ass battle system right there. I agree with Vagrant story and bayonetta as well.

You know, its best not to mention games you have no experience with. Anyone who knows anything about any of the 3d Ninja Gaidens knows this to be false. Maybe if you're playing on the most piss poor easy difficulty then sure, but then again you wouldnt be playing the game as intended. Its like when you see some Ninty hater claiming that Mario games have not advanced since the NES era, or some kid that thinks Street Fighter games are all about spamming fireballs and take no skill. Its a clear sign you have little to know experience with the game. Claiming PoPWW to be the best is already laughable as is, but then to say that and follow up with such fallacy for one of the most respected action combat systems in gaming? It would be like me claiming Bubsy 3d to be one of the best platformers, while saying SMG2 is garbage. A bunch of BS lol.prince of persia warrior within obviously

Yeah man, that freeflow system is really badass.
Anyway, I'll say Patapon as unique :P
Yeah, Batman:AA had immensely satisfying combat. AC2 was solid too, but beating people in Batman was just glorious.Mount & Blade: Warband or the Souls games (Demon Souls, Dark Souls.)

Agreed with this (if we are talking about action RPGs that is) Both Mount&Blade and the Souls games both have great combat, but they stand out in different ways. Dang I remember posting in this thread over a year ago :)

lol mount and blade plays like one of those bad wii games where you have to waggle to attack, but since they couldn't make it for the wii, they mapped the waggle to the mouse.[QUOTE="Vesica_Prime"]

"Mount&Blade: Warband" Wow this looks incredible. I have to try thisfrankist
Try the demo first, because the learning curve is as steep as trying to climb Mt Everest with two pegs.

There is velocity involved affecting damage, different behaviour for various weapons, regional damage and armor (ie boots wont protect you from blows in the head), weapons reacting to objects, lack of HP bloating as most stuff die in a hit or 2, oh and there is kicking as well, which is very useful for 2 handers and polearm users like me when those pesky melee dudes get too close.
M&B:W's combat SS's combat, and I like SS's combat.

yeah, but if it controls like s***, then nothing else matters. it plays bad and the camera waggles around as you attack. tom mcshea should give this a try, he'd scream for forgiveness for skyward sword :Pyeah, but if it controls like s***, then nothing else matters. it plays bad and the camera waggles around as you attack. tom mcshea should give this a try, he'd scream for forgiveness for skyward sword :PBrunoBRS
Now I know you haven't played it. It controls like virtually every first person game, unless you were flailing the mouse around for some form of mental stimulation for a simple mind.
I'll give you a 6/10 for making me believe you actually played it.

And as you get better at the controls, the movements you make with the mouse will be ever so subtle so you will barely notice the camera move.

i did play it. after i was done with the turorial and got mugged by a random NPC before someone explained how to draw/put away my weapons, i managed to find an arena-thing. went in, at first i tried landing the attacks properly, but the camera flung around anyway and the results barely mattered, so i tried flailing the mouse and it worked just as well. sure i was probably very early on and that's why it was so easy, but that doesn't take away the fact that the swordplay controls are awful. and it's exactly the kind of thing developers were mapping to the wiimote early on its life, and it didn't work back then. Please Log In to post.
