for me its ZOE 2. You just feel like a god in that game, especially once you get the ability to teleport. This game captures the essence of fast-paced, gundam-style combat better than any of the hundred gundam games they ever released

If not counting straight up fighting games, then any answer in this thread that is not Ninja Gaiden Black is absolutely wrong!

AC: Brotherhood actually has pretty unique combat system, and it's extremely satisfying if you pull them off long enough. Problem is, it also get's quite frustrating unless you master it. Also there aren't a lot of times you can pull it off because it require hordes of enemies that doesn't have spears to make it relatively easy and long enough (Sequence 5's "Gatekeeper" is my favourite place). that's why this game needs Arena Mode like God of War in VR missions.

Resonance of Fate had a pretty unique combat system as well as Valkyria Chronicles for an SRPG.

Kind of vague thread really. We could be comparing anything, be it all the sub genres of RPGs, or if you count fighting games then that genre will take it by default. Too many factors. If we are talking about the best combat among action/action adventure which apparently is the trend in this thread then I would go with any of the 3d Ninja Gaiden titles. I would go as far as to say its a fact. Even the worst 3d Ninja Gaiden still trumps the competition by a landslide, at least for this genre. It pisses me off that the first one released in 04, Black perfected the formula in 05 and here we are all these years later with still no competition. I thought the genre would have really progressed by now, but the combat in other games is still just as bland as always. Though props to DMC3 and Bayonetta for shaking things up a little. As for most unique I dont know.

Demon's Souls has a pretty good combat system. Most games are like "Tight hallway, swinging massive weapon? IT CUTS THROUGH ANYTHING" Demon's Souls is like "Tight hallway, swinging massive weapon? If you actually land a hit with it at all, you might lightly scratch the person"

Don't forget Dynasty Warriors 3, 4, and 5. They did a truly excellent job on expanding such a rich and diverse combat system that never, ever got old. 6 was also just a refreshing masterpiece of game design that revamped the combat system for a new generation in the best way they possibly could.

Well, for tactics, I'd say Jagged Alliance 2,. Fallout 1 and 2 weren't incredible like that, but the death animations were pretty badass, especially the unique ones. It was very satisfying.

As far as action games, I'd usually say NG, but Bayonetta has stood out to me lately. The combat in that game just feels very natural and rewarding, and the visual and soundtrack cues work flawlessly, to the degree that the rhythm of the combat becomes sort of engrained in your mind after playing it for even a modest amount of time. It's master-class as far as combat systems go.

EDIT: Read the post above mentioning Batman: AA, and yes, it does deserve a mention. It was smooth and engaging, and managed to make you feel like an absolute badass without being too easy. I remember thinking whilst playing it that Ubisoft should take notes for Assassin's Creed.

Condemned 2 was tons of fun and had some cool moves. Demon's Souls can be played just by hacking and slashing, but then you would be missing out on so many layers of moves and special things you can do with a sword.

i'm sorry, if we're talking mech combat, Armored Core will always be king in gameplay, but that's it really. and probably resonance of fate or phantom dust ( to those who played the game ).

Same for me. Another good one, although I'm not sure its unique, its Fallout 3's combat.

What about fighting other players? In a small hallway, the guy with the spear is going to have a pretty easy fight against the guy with the axe.

Off the top of my head, id say demons souls, Ys series, and the the ninja gaiden's. Skyward sword might be up there too depending how fluid and responsive it turns out to be.

Nothing is as deep, or requires as much skill as playing Vergil on Dante Must Die. When people try and call DMC a "button masher" I just laugh. You can't beat anything past Normal by button mashing.

Diablo series has the most inventive and unique combat system off almost all games this and last gen. Is has more depth in in than any action rpg game and still manages to be played with just the mouse.

Of the games I've played this gen I think Batman. But I haven't played Demon soul's nor ninja gaiden. Worst is assassin's creed 1 IMO. GOW3 is awesome, but didn't feel as unique and fluid as batman. Anyway I read somewhere Arkham City will have twice as many combat animations and also let Batman take out two enemies at once as well as fight in the air. Im really, reallylooking forward to that game 8)!
