It really is. Terrific from start to finish.
It toppled mighty giants of cinema such as AC and the Tomb Raider films? Get the Oscars ready.
Maybe for best special effects.
Film wise, it's real good. Only bogged down by a third act that was perhaps may be too saturday morning cartoon for some people. The humor, the action sequences, it's a well acted and solid film. Well above its peers.
I’m not a Pokémon guy so I doubt I’ll see it. The best videogame movie I’ve ever seen was the Street Fighter 2 animated movie back in the 90s followed by the first MK movie :P
@son-goku7523: I used to love the Mortal Kombat movie as well. It wiped the floor with that Van Damme Street Fighter movie. I agree that the MK movie was the second best video game movie of the '90s, after the Street Fighter II animated movie.
@vfighter: Wreck-It Ralph is a movie about video games, but not a video game movie adaptation. Usually when people say "video game movies", they mean adaptations. Although you could almost consider Wreck-It Ralph a kind of Donkey Kong adaptation, since its story is built around the basic premise of Donkey Kong. Much like what the Rampage movie does with the Rampage arcade game.
It did break the video game curse. No other video game movie has received a Fresh Score on RottenTomatoes. Hard to believe nearly 25 years of video game movies and none of them could crack a Fresh rating. You need at least 60%-65% I believe to be deemed Fresh, and AC and Tomb Raider sorta got close, around the 50s.
And movies like Wreck-It-Ralph don't count (as great as it was), as they are movies about video games rather than based on a game. Ironically, those types of movies do way better critically (recent Jumanji being another example)
*Best live action movie based on a video game.*
And the reason I would say it beats Mortal Kombat is because this film is a little less corny and doesn't fall into the trap of trying to replicate a game.
It's an original story that just happens to take place in the pokemon world, which I think is why it works. Also you can't beat a good detective/mystery story. There's no origin story, no explanation of what pokemon are or why they exist. Just the world we love and a story that takes place in it.
Unlike say, SONIC, which is a clear "he comes into our world" story which rarely if ever works.
It looks like the first video game movie made with competence.
It's very solid from start to finish. Lots of adult humor, gorgeous special effects.
By the way, SILENT HILL is also a terrific video game movie, surprised no one has mentioned it.
@Litchie: Mortal Kombat movies were so bad lol. I was a kid when they released and I still remember being jarred by the terrible acting.
MK: Annihilation is one of the greatest comedies ever made.

Compared to Detective Pikachu where the main kid is an excellent actor and Pikachu is very well voiced. I didn't think so at first but Reynolds was the best choice. Very dead-pool at times, but that's a good thing.

I haven't seen Detective Pikachu but I have heard great things about it. Others have also told me that it is the best of its kind. Now I have even more of a reason to go see it.
Also, yes I agree about MK movies excelling if you put them into the comedy category!
@Litchie: If it is anything like the story mode in MK 11 that would be fantastic. It's got a lot of comedy and self parodying, combined with movie references from the 90s.
MK11 story mode is the best story mode i've ever played in a fighting game.
Unpopular opinion - MK doesn't need a live action movie, story-mode basically is a movie
Other than the first movie we got, yeah I agree.

I actually enjoyed the first MK movie unironically. While the plot was basic and shallow, and a fantasy riff on Bruce Lee's Enter the Dragon, it's not like people watch martial arts movies for the plot. Martial arts movies are all about the action, and that's where MK delivered. While the action definitely pales in comparison to Hong Kong movies, MK had decent martial arts action scenes, argubaly some of the best in a Hollywood movie. Although that's a low bar, as most Hollywood martial arts movies suck. But above all, MK had one of the most kickass movie soundtracks of all time. Its '90s techno soundtrack still sounds great to this day.
But then again, I was a kid at the time. The first MK movie was fun for kids, but probably not so much for adults. It also helps that MK came on the heels of Van Damme's Street Fighter, which made MK look pretty damn good in comparison. Either way, it's easy to see why the first MK movie was a commercial success, because it was rare to see a decent martial arts movie from Hollywood (let alone a decent video game movie), combined with the awesome techno soundtrack.
As for the sequel, MK Annihilation, that's worse than Van Damme's Street Fighter.... The Van Damme SF movie is definitely the better "so bad, it's good" comedy movie.
@Jag85: well hell, I thought the comics came after guess I was wrong after all. I really liked the movie though and the game as well.
It toppled mighty giants of cinema such as AC and the Tomb Raider films? Get the Oscars ready.
Well, it's no Bloodrayne, but really...who can do better than Uwe Boll?
It's decent. I feel like Ryan Reynolds held the movie together. The plot is a bit safe, and the movie didn't blow my mind with its plot. But it is decent, and I didn't mind the CG at all. Although, I would've loved to see more fights, but the last arc had a bit of a good ol' pokefight.
@Bread_or_Decide:
Mmmkay.... So either that means it was awesome or that it just beat the other movie adaptations. Which would not be saying much. I'm really curious about it though! I might not be a Pokemon fan but the movie looked really good from the trailers.

I watched MK 10 and 11 story mode on YouTube and they were awful.
Might as well call it a Disney/Marvel movie.
